Country Pond Still A Concern

Country Pond Still A ConcernCountry Pond users are still concerned about what might be contaminating the water, and are asking for the results of a recent investigation into possible contaminants.

One of the men who regularly washes car there, asked how business had been affected, told Caribarena.com, "People still come and so, but we would love to hear what them say in the water report for real. So long them say them suppose to bring out one report, and we no hear nothing else from that. So me really want to know wha a go on.”

A long-time customer expressed his disgust with what he termed the “long overdue” results of the testing.

He said although he no longer gets his car washed at the Pond as often, he is concerned about the possible health risk to the men who earn a living there.

“If there is something for us to be concerned about, let us know," he said. "This pond is not just lying there, it’s being used on a daily basis, and I think more efforts should be made by the authorities to bring the results to the people.”

He suggested, “Maybe there is some precaution, some extra health measures they would have to take, for their own safety. Let them know what is going on. I think we here in Antigua drag our feet on important things too much. Even if it takes this amount of  time, which I think it shouldn’t, to complete a water test, those in charge should, in the meantime come to the public with certain explanations about why we are still waiting. I think we need to do better than this in this day and age.”

The man responsible for releasing the results, Chief Health Inspector Lionel Michael, when last contacted, said the results would be in soon, and an official statement would be made shortly.

We were told by sources that the water testing was done at a local lab. Michael, however, was last reported to be off-island.

sewage plant

#12 tenman » 2010-12-13 12:56

I listened to MP Baptiste recently and he stated that the solution for gaining funding where the sewage plant is concerned is to allow a private company to finance and manage it. Persons would pay for utilizing it. The problem with this idea is we are speaking of something that does not simply affect one individual. Therefore if someone chooses not to use the private owned sewage plant, there is a possibility that this decision could effect the health of the nation. This to me seems to be something that government needs to deeply involved in. I fail to understand why its more essential to provide school meals and school uniforms yet something as essential as sewage system should be private sector driven

Brilliant point, we are so wealthy, that our representatives are always away off Island and run the country from there. Every time they are off the Island.

What's in the water?

#9 Buzzbomb » 2010-12-13 07:17

Results of the investigation into water contaminents should be made public. Too many times I have seen Lionel Micheal, with his knowledge and decades of experience ignored by government because of other political interests. We suspect Country Pond may contain toxins of concern to health. We know that there are no sewers in St. John's and we know that our government covered the drainage gutters downtown so they cannot be cleaned regularly or sanitized with powdered lime any more.
We also know that many of us are downtown every day and so are our our children.
I'd like to read the water analysis report.

What about all the other sewage in the streets?

#8 American Girl » 2010-12-13 04:24

This only deals with the issue of country pond, what about the sewage that is visibly seen and smelt in St. Johns, McKinnons, etc... The whole island is one big petrie dish with germs and diseases running rampant.

Dadliman, I concur with you 100 %. Here is what Asot Michael said as reported by Caribarena, “He did not stop there, but alleged that the waste water treatment plant at the hospital had broken down since December 2009, and “near raw sewerage is going into Country Pond.” He called on the health minister to mount an investigation.” Caribarena, May 19, 2010., Hospital Group considering legal action

In the same article, here is what Lionel Michael said, “There is no waste water, there is no sewerage, treated or untreated, entering any of

Who is on First?

In another article, “Country Pond Plans Forgotten, March 7, 2010, here is an excerpt, “In one corner of the pond, earth is emerging and vegetation is creeping up the surface. A heap of debris and empty bottles is also setting up shop in that area, and we have had enough experience to know what this can harbor.”

I also recall a lengthy discussion about a sewer system and someone indicated that the consultants said the cost to build one would be prohibitive.

So folks, there is nothing new here. The issues come up, we debate them and nothing ever happens.

Playing in Pooh
written by Yogi, August 25, 2010
Could you imagine telling people in Toronto, New York, or London there’s a high content of pooh somewhere, but until we can confirm the pooh will really do harm to you as a local, we think it is OK you keep playing with it. Though for everyone else everywhere in the real world dabbling in pooh can ultimately kill, we have to make sure that the locals here are not super-human and will not be affected by the pooh.
However, in the event the it is enough pooh to kill, cause it takes a certain amount of pooh to make a situation bad, we will not responsible for any illness caught by any persons who was playing with the pooh, though we said it might be pooh, but did not take away the access to said pooh, cause though we can run a country, we can’t see any need to exercise public safety. It is more fun watching people splash around in said pooh.

From my understanding there is treated and untreated sewage from business, as well as the government offices empty into country pond. Washing cars at country pond is probably not good for one’s health, and it is also bad for the environment. Because all the contaminants, such as oil that come from was washing the cars end up in St. Johns Harbor. The pond was initially design for flood control the for city donkey years ago, and with no central sewer system in town there no telling what in Country Pond.

I agree with you but i must say this economy would drive a man to rob even thou he knows he may be caught and severely punish.

I think SOME of the contaminants are from the chemicals and oils etcetera which comes from the washing of cars, I am guessing but please consult the experts. The final thing, when things could severely and quickly affect the public I believe people in Authority should give that priority and also address the public on the matter very often. It is about acknowledging, it is about LOVE. I am i the only one who thinks like this, there must be more out there. Love is the Answer and there is no other.

If those guys want to ply their trade, I suggest that they (not the government) pool their resources together and invest in a pump and a tank, and conduct their business in a different location. The problem is that they want to ply their trade for free, regardless of the contamination level of the pond, and thet's why they're in that predicament now. At some point they have to accept the reality for what it is and move to another location.

Ignorance: the worse disease

#1 Morris » 2010-12-12 22:14

Ignorance is the worse disease known to man. There is no doubt that the water is contaminated, yet people are still being defiant and continue to ply their trade. The pond is stagnant and contamination only accumulates over time, just refrain from using the water.
