Officials Mum on TB at Clarevue

Officially Mum on TB at Clarevue Antigua St. John's - Tuberculosis has sprung up at the Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital, with one patient allegedly dying from the disease, and at least two employees diagnosed with it.

Caribarena learned about this situation on Wednesday as the facility celebrated the re-commissioning of its newly renovated US$50,000 Men’s Ward.

Reports indicated that a patient died from TB last weekend after being ill for some time. He was reportedly admitted to the Mount St John’s Medical Center last Friday, and succumbed a few days later.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Edson Joseph said he was aware of the situation, but could not comment.

“Those are matters that are handled exclusively by the chief medical officer, Dr Rhonda Sealey-Thomas. She would be the appropriate person to deal with,” Joseph said.

He added that matters like these would be considered  “highly technical” and certainly of national concern.

Superintendent of the Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital Clarence Pilgrim also declined to comment, since he had not been officially informed on the matter, but said he had heard rumours.

Pilgrim said he had been on vacation, and would be seeking details on the matter.

Attempts to reach the chief medical officer were unsuccessful.

Well-placed sources have said staff members and patients who were in contact with the sick resident have been undergoing tests provided by the hospital.

It is apparent, that you read very well but comprehend very little.
Some individuals have to read over, and over, and over, until they get the meaning of a word, phrase, sentence or paragraph, so, please do yourself a favor, read the article again if you have to. Unless, the reporter is giving wrong information, I have NOT seen the word alleged
Please point me to it. Now, it's your turn to search or re-read.

@ Jumbee Pcknee

It is well and good to say the administrators should be informed at all times particularly on these matters, but you must agree, information must come from a process of medical testing which may not produce immediate results. In other words any information is not good enough, accurate information is what is needed in such serious matters.I do not want any medical administrator giving me half baked information in such a nationally important matter! before so, shut up, do your research and then speak!

...who's in charge?...

#3 Jumbee Picknee » 2013-01-17 08:56

Does anyone in charge knows anything? As contagious and communicable as this disease is, this type of behavior by those in charge is ridiculous. You are at the helm to know, be informed at all times in order to make the right and proper decisions.

What about the Lions Club Members and other visitors to the Mental Home hoping to offer assistance? Don't they deserve to know about this risk?

Come on Sealy-Thomas you can pose for jewelry well come in front of the camera now and do the job you are paid to do tell us what is going on. This could save lives.

Where is Loudmouth Wilmouth in all of this?

Not Unusual

#1 Royce » 2013-01-17 06:34

It is not unusual for environments like Hospitals, Schools, Churches and other places where there is a close interaction of persons, to be at risk for communicable diseases like TB, once there is a carrier among them. What is important is for persons to always be alert and take the necessary precautions. In this case it would be interesting to find out if Mount St. john's officially informed Clarevue Hospital that the patient died from TB, and if they did at what time?
