MSJMC Denies Anesthetic Shortage

MSJMC Denies Anesthetic ShortageAntigua St. John's - Head of Marketing and Communications at the Mount St John’s Medical Center Salma Crump has refuted accusations that the hospital is performing medical procedures without anesthetics.

Crump was responding on Thursday to public concerns called in via radio over the past few days that there was a shortage of the drug at the hospital, and procedures like D&C (Dilation and Curettage) had been performed without it.

“I really can’t speak to what you are being told, from the standpoint that you can’t conduct surgery without it. (But) It just would not happen, so to speak,” Crump said.

A D&C is often performed in cases of abortion and miscarriage where there is excessive bleeding. It is a surgical procedure in which the cervix is expanded using a dilator and the uterine lining scraped with a curette.

Initial reports had suggested that MSJMC had a shipment of the drug sitting at the port, but could not clear it due to financial constraints.

But Crump was quick to rebuff that notion. She said, “...We are a statutory corporation and that gives us exemption from port fees.”

The head of marketing and communications said she was positive that under no circumstance would hospital physicians perform any procedure requiring the drug, without having it on hand.

“…It is just not going to happen… I can say that with certainty. No one is going to put you under a knife without anesthetics,” Crump said.

Meanwhile, the patient who had the D&C was reported to be recovering favourably.

Antigua operated the same way pre UPP get real! You guys must be mental. Now while I agree UPP have no mnagement skills it was the good work of the ALP that put them there. Let's be honest and we will be able to make progress.

No anaesthetic?

I can believe this story. The UPP continues to operate like they are all comatose, that could explain the shortage - so much has been used on them.

God help us all!

Last year November, my wife had an appointment so do a procedure that would require general anaesthetic. She was told that the surgery would have to be posponed because there were only supplies to do emergencies. Its now FEBRUARY and she cannot be admitted to perform the surgery. This was told by the physician designated to perform the operation.

So who is telling lies?

It just would not happen, so to speak

I do not believe that they would do surgery with the drug and the Initial reports that suggested that MSJMC had a shipment of the drug sitting at the port, but could not clear it due to financial constraints is not really logical, however I don't believe Ms Crump was convincing and MSJMC has too much negative information constantly. To much people are skiptical about the organization. It really need some public relations. This article is unclear when it mentioned the patient that had the procedure they failed to go into details on what happened to that patient.
