Antigua St. John's - Visiting hours at the Mount St Johns Medical Centre will be changing on February 1.
A release from the facility said patients in the medical, surgical, pediatric, and maternity units will be able to have visitors from 10:30 am to 9:00 pm, seven days per week. The original visiting hours began at 7:30 am.
The hours for the Intensive Care Units will remain the same.
The release said the change sprung from a pilot project that moved the hours to allow doctors and nurses to make their morning rounds uninterrupted.
According to Director of Nursing Natalie Southwell, “We do want to caution our visitors though that our clinicians are chiefly responsible for your loved ones and their care, and sometimes, acting in their best interest, may from time to time want to discuss with you what is appropriate for them with regards to appropriate visiting times.”
As with the pilot project, discretion remains with the nurse in charge of the unit at the time. Visitors may be asked to leave the clinical area, particularly when patients need urgent care or during an examination or procedure. However, visitors are welcome to visit the unit to assist their loved ones during meals.
Director of Quality & Projects Paula Miller said, “Certain rules will be maintained; two visitors per patient bed, etc. And we found relatives were much more obliging when asked to leave while their family member was being cared for, because they knew they could come back. When family members have a great visitor experience, I strongly believe that some of that translates to the patient.”
