Antigua St. John's - After several years of preparation, the Ministry of Health is fully embarking on a comprehensive approach towards the management of Antigua & Barbuda’s Health Information System.

To this effect, stakeholders from both private and public sector organizations, as well as statutory bodies and Non-governmental Organizations, met and completed a comprehensive assessment of Antigua & Barbuda’s Health Information System, using the Health Metrics Network Assessment tool.

The assessment exercise was facilitated by Yvette Holder, Consultant Epidemiologist and Biostatistician, who was contracted by the Pan American Health Organization to complete this project.  Ms Holder was assisted by Colin O’Keiffe, Head of the Health Information Division in the Ministry of Health.

The Health Information System is the collection of all the necessary components which ensure health data are collected, compiled, analyzed, presented, distributed, utilized and secured, using the best available administrative, technical and technological resources.  As such, the Health Information System is comprised of a vast number of stakeholders.

Outputs from this major activity include a Health Information Policy document, a Strategic Plan of Action and supporting legislation.  It is anticipated that this historic step would have positive implications for the monitoring and evaluating of the delivery of quality Health care in Antigua & Barbuda and the rest of the region.
