Trio Attend Emergency Care Course and Conference

Dr José Humphreys Dr Rasheda Williams and Nurse Joyan QuinnAntigua St. John’s - Three Antiguan health care providers are better equipped to handle emergencies, having benefitted from a fully accredited course and training in Emergency Medicine held recently in Curacao.

Dr José Humphreys, Dr Rasheda Williams and Nurse Joyan Quinn took part in a two-day certificate theoretical and practical course and a six-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference on Emergency Care.



Other participants were from Harvard Medical School (USA), Suriname, St. Maarten, St Eustatius, Holland, Aruba and Curacao; however, the three Antiguans were the only representatives from the English speaking Caribbean.

Among the topics covered were Introduction to Airway Management (Anatomy of the Airway, Principles of Airway Management and Airway Algorithms and Indications for Intubation/Respiratory Failure); Pharmacology in Airway Management, Difficult Airway and Rapid Sequence Intubation and Introduction to Airway Devices.

Content also included Introduction to Pediatric Airway Management (Anatomy of the Pediatric Airway, Principles of Pediatric Airway Management and Special Considerations in Pediatric Airways), Pediatric Pharmacology in Pediatric; Pediatric Difficult and Fail Airway and Pediatric Difficult Airway and Rapid Sequence Intubation and Surgical Airway in Pediatrics).

The group was exposed to a Code Case Practice, examination and practical test cases. They received hands-on training in BMV Techniques, Laryngoscopy and Intubation, Failed and Surgical Airways, Supraglotic Devices in both adults and pediatrics and Difficult Airway Management (fiber optic, lighted stylets, Video Laryngoscopy, etc).

The team also received training in Human Trafficking for healthcare providers in addition to learning how to identify and deal with the climaxing issue.

Drs. Humphreys and Williams were given the opportunity to put their skills into practice by working in the Emergency Medicine Department at Curacao’s St. Elisabeth Hospital.

Up to 50 CMEs were awarded for the airways course and conference. Facilitators included physicians and heads of departments from various university programmes in Europe, the Caribbean and the US, including Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA.

Team Leader Dr. José Humphreys conveyed his excitement at the opportunity to attend the course.

He said, “We were exposed to a cadre of training, from simple intubations to fiber-optic, video and surgical intubation; from running regular emergency and trauma codes to intraosseous delivery of fluids in resuscitations.  Our exposure was invaluable; our stint at St. Elisabeth Hospital Emergency department was priceless.”

The doctor expressed thanks to Dr. Eumel Samuel and the Belmont Clinic Ltd for its role in making this training possible.

In responding Dr. Samuel, Chairman of Belmont Clinic Ltd, was pleased with the team’s eagerness to learn and become trailblazers in the advances in medicine. Said he, "Belmont Clinic continues to educate its Doctors."

Conference Coordinator Dr. Jeanne Koeijers, Internist/Intensivist, expressed gratitude to the Antiguan team and hopes to development a long term relationship with the team and others in health care training.



Partners for the course include St. Elisabeth Hospital, Netherlands Foundation for Clinical Higher Education, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School (Division of Global Health and Human Rights) and The Ujenzi Trust.
