Local Labs Score Well in Regional Tests

Antigua St. John's - The step towards regional accreditation of medical laboratories operating in Antigua & Barbuda is reportedly progressing well with four labs meeting the standards, so far, in proficiency testing.

Director of the Bureau of Standards Dianne Lalla-Rodrigues said the labs were able to earn certificates as a result.

"What this means is that you have better assurance of the quality of the test results for those particular tests coming out of those laboratories," she said.

Approval means that lab technicians have the competence to administer the particular test, shows that the method being used is working and that the equipment is in proper working order.

It was explained that the testing process involves sending a standard medical sample to all participating laboratories for testing.

The results are then compared and those within a certain range are deemed to be competent.

The tests have been administered regionally for the past four years with labs tested every three months to earn a certificate in the particular area. The process is continuous.

"This is something we hope that all the medical labs would get into," the bureau director said.

At last check there were about seven laboratories operating in the country.

The testing process is managed by the Caricom Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality under the Inter-American Development Bank's standards development project.
