Elderly Woman Dies Waiting On EMS

Elderly Woman Dies Waiting On EMSAntigua St John's - An 87-year-old woman died Tuesday at Woods Urgent Care Clinic at Woods Center while awaiting Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel to transport her to Mount St. John’s Medical Center.

According to information reaching Caribarena.com, the incident occurred around 1:45 pm.

Sources say the woman had trouble breathing before she collapsed in the clinic. Family and other close relatives of the deceased who were at the scene were visibly shaken.
“She died waiting on the ambulance which never turned up,” sources said.

Caribarena contacted the EMS for clarification but was told “we have no information” by an individual who declined to reveal his identity.

Employees at the clinic operated by Dr. Jason R. Belizaire confirmed that the elderly woman was indeed waiting on the ambulance at the time of her death. They declined to provide any personal information, including the nature of her ailment.

Police spokesman William Holder said officers are looking into the matter.

skyewill i am appalled at your suggestion...th is is the attitude of most persons in this country jail them b4 trial...i suggest u fire your brain for thinking such foolishness
since you seem not to know much about how these procedures function y not take a day off and visit the 911 and ems department.

then you and others like you would be inclined to ask the "top notch emergency care facility" that this poor lady was taken. these questions
1.what condition she was in when taken there?
2. after the woman went into respiratory distress what care did the " top notch staff provide?
3.was C.P.R administered..w as A.C.L.S. rendered.?
4.does this facility really render emergency care as advertise if so is there even a 1 bed ICU there for the stabilization of patients?

to the family members, my condolences but i think your focus and investigation should be targeted at the "top notch facility that you took your
relative to. I am sure you took her there in good faith that it would she would receive the best of care.
did you get the services that they said they would provide?

Blame Game

#23 PATRIOTS » 2012-06-08 10:53

I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THE DEATH, MY CONDOLENCES. BUT, WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY, RATHER THAN PUTTING THE BURDEN ON THE RESOURCES OF THE STATE. AS A RELATIVE, AND MY FAMILY IS IN DISTRESS MY FIRST ORDER IS TO TAKE THEM TO THE HOSPITAL....RAT HER THAN WAITING FOR AN AMBULANCE TO LEAVE LOCATION X. WILL I SIT THERE FOR HOURS AND NOT TAKE A TAXI OR DRIVE 10 MINUTES TO THE HOSPITAL OR EVEN TWO MINUTES TO THE MEDICAL CENTRE AT WOODS. BUT RATHER SIT BACK xxx xxx xxx....GIVE ME A BREAK! WE ARE TOO CHEAP AND CARELESS...DON' T GET ME WRONG THE EMS HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO, BUT THE FAMILY NEGLECTED HER TOO.

I respect you position on religion, so if god was not in control who was, so one clearly had to be , who Dr. Jason R. Belizaire? ok if he was than is he not to blame for her death? let me answer that .no he is not. he did not give her life nor did he take it away from her
Queen there is no medical procedure that will allow you to live but one second longer than intended. so clearly we have no control over such events .
and queen I am a agnostic I have never had any concrete proof or disproof that there is a god but that what we chose to believe and i respect that for I have no better answer to the God Question. may you do so please share I would like to learn if you have something to teach .But I am really sure that we are not in control of life because if that where so no one would ever die , in the words of peter tosh "every one wants to to to heaven but no one wants to die" Queen i respect your view point .Chef how ever has a different opinion, Chef rather say's why not before he says does not. what else is there to give comfort?

everybody has an openion about everything with out doing there research..such is the culture..here are some facts before you start commenting based on your emotions EMS personal who consist of 28 Emergency medical technicians responds to over SEVEN THOUSAND 7000 calls per year in Antigua compare that to any other service. there is on average of two abulance (unit) per shift, one minor call takes about 45 minutes to clear, major call about hour and a half depending the situation. the real problem is that 60% of the calls come from individuals who call for non emergency situation that could have been resolve at the local clinices, becaus e they think the ambulance will get them faster service at the ER , which in reality does not work that way...look for the meaning of the work triage.

do not blame them

#19 digusted » 2012-06-07 02:32

the life of the E.M.T"s scenario.. an ambulance is requested at 3 am for person in old road. when they get there the ems personnel are being told that the person have not been feeling well for about a week they went to the doc this morning at mount st john and did not get through so they went home and called the ambulance.
the patient is loaded and being transported on the way about in the urlings area there is a call that there is an accident on old parham road person badly damage.( there is only one unit working that shift.) what are they to do
i don't think that ems is like the state Farm commercial " Like a good neighbor E.M.S is there."

do not blame them

#18 digusted » 2012-06-07 00:43

condolences to the family, but i think we need to put the blame where the blame should go. firstly she was in a top notch urgent care facility, since when transporting for warding becomes an emergency, i would want to think that all emergency procedures should have been capably handled by that facility and when the patient is stable enough for transporting then she would be...the ambulance is summoned for all sorts of non- emergencies and it is so unfortunate when there could likely be a real emergency it is being held up and could not get there because people like you, you, and yes you call them unnecessarily. i wish that all those who think the ems workers have it easy should go and volunteer for a half a day and u would see the work these men and women do for the measly $1900.00 they are being paid so please before you you and yes you point your fingers put the blame where the blame should go

Something is taking place in our healthcare system and it smells fishy.
Melissa(Dxxxin) xxxxt of Jennings died in April at the age of nineteen after giving birth.
You know what....to put it in plain language.....sh e developed complications because of the afterbirth that was left back.
Time to sue, sue, sue and make sure monies are paid out and people will listen.
The Nurses will take genuine care and stop gossiping around the Maternity desk and find real work to do.
My daughter nearly died there in 2010........nee d I say more?
Me fraid dem bad and as for the ambulance system....the workers need real training....som e of them that is.

Eric - where is your soul?

#16 tenman » 2012-06-06 18:44

Eric, why are you so heartless? Your focus at all times is on attacking the ALP and defending the present government. Not once have you showed compassion for your fellow citizens and residents. Your comments paint the current government as without sin when even the PM has admitted to making mistakes. Even the current finance minister who sometimes has problems with the truth has admitted that the UPP record is not one of perfection. Your comments indicate that you are either being paid to write what you do and or you are simply someone who has sold your soul

Maybe, if we in Antigua were not using the EMS and it’s ambulances as a taxi service whenever they want a ride to the hospital for routine purposes, them one would more than likely be available when one really needed it.

EMS needs revamping

#14 Whofeelsitknowsit » 2012-06-06 14:21

I have been the victim of the incompetence of EMS. One evening I was awakened from my sleep with very strong palpitations. I immediately called the EMS and was told they did not have an ambulance available and when one was available they would call to see if i still needed the service. Can you imagine that? Here I am alone at home facing the possibility that I might be having a heart attack. I live on the southern side of the island and had to call my husband who was on the north eastern side of the island to come home and take me to MSJMC. Having experienced this why would I not think that the EMS was responsible for this woman 's death?

#13 tenman » 2012-06-06 14:16

Condolences to the family and friends of this unnamed elderly lady. If Dr. Belizaire facility is considered the same as Dr. John's (a hospital) my understanding is EMS does not send ambulances to transfer persons from one hospital to another. Its up to the family or the said hospital to deal with transporting to another facility

#12 It Is Me » 2012-06-06 13:45

I am waiting to get the facts ... but I hope this is not a case of "no money-no doctor" when it comes to the "urgent care" facility!

Some real important questions should come out of this ... How did the lady die? who called the EMS? When did they call the EMS? And why didn't the EMS show up?

Did the Urgent care facility call 911? If so, the call should be logged with a time stamp.

WHO IS TO BE BLAMED?

#9 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-06 09:41

My condolences to the family, this issue needs further investigation before pointing an accusing finger and condemning Antigua health care system.

The elderly woman was a patient of JRB, whatever happened between the woman's last visit an EMS non-arrival, does not necessarily mean EMS is blameworthy.

The family should hire a legal luminary and sue whoever is responsible, since there maybe more to this issue.

Come to Chicago's public hospital and unless you are having a heart or asma attack it could take up to eight hours if not longer. By the way they provide excellent medical service.

He saw that there was no hope for her unless been warded.
sorry that a non starter. (lame excuse) .Hmm Chef learns every day , never knew that "warding "( placing a patient in a bed under close medical supervision including nurses) was a live saving medical procedure.. especially at age 87 and where ?? at MSJMC.? how bizarre.
Sorry why does it not dawn on you the lady was 87 and in poor health. her time had come to enjoy eternal peace .
why does it not ring trough that it is very likely the only fact to blame here is life, because it must end ( unexpected at 87) lets just move on..
there is nothing here. let us show some respect for her loved one's and let this be the end of this story..

De Real Observer

#6 Osbert R. Frederick » 2012-06-06 08:48

All Antigua has gone to the DOGS. Health care is a mess. A friend of mine rushed to the MSJMC yesterday at 5:00 ma and did not see a doctor until 12:00 noon. A wait of seven hours? However, I am told that she was lucky it did not take longer. What are Antiguans waiting for? Will all of us have to die before people begin to see that the UPP is 'death' to this country? Heaven help us!!!!

Required warding

#5 Fair » 2012-06-06 08:36

This lady probably required to be warded. JRB Urgent care is the best in the island, if I might say so. Unfortunately Dr. Belizaire did what he could and because he does not have warding facilities, he transfers her to mount st. John. He saw that there was no hope for her unless been warded. Unfortunately the EMS was delayed. Get all the facts people, before we start the judgement thing.

What??????????? ???????

#4 Socrates » 2012-06-06 08:18

This is absolutely unheard of in a modern society "the EMS did not turn up"???? This is the craziest thing I heard since Wilmouth Daniel announced that they will be studying India's Healthcare System in order to improve Antigua's, when according to the World Health Organization Antigua's healthcare is ranked higher in quality and delivery than India's. All crazy people inna Antigua!!!

not so fast sky

#3 Microwave chef » 2012-06-06 08:18

sky why are you blaming the EMS workers? based on what your prejudice?
few facts: she is at an urgent care center stress urgent. a medical facility billed as top notch.. take her where , so MSJMC is superior to this place when it comes to urgent medical care? i ask you sky>> now some more facts. Fact, she was 87 years old and clearly not doing well that's why she would be seeing a doctor.
opinion , God is in control .at age 87 really god is.
chef expresses his condolences to her family.
facts ( education) sky , not prejudice opinion, that's what is wrong with most of us in antigua that,s why we are in such miserable state.

Shamefull

#1 skyewill » 2012-06-06 06:57

This is the attitude of a lot of workers in Antigua. The head of EMS should be fired and so should the dispatcher and anyone else who was on duty. We need to train students at the college to inturn at government offices and facilities so they can take over when we fire those refuse to do their jobs.
