APUA Opens New Reverse Osmosis Plant

PM Spencer and Minister Baptiste at the New Reverse Osmosis PlantAntigua St John's - APUA commissioned a new reverse osmosis plant at Ffryes Beach on November 30, a release revealed on Wednesday. The purchase of the plant and the construction of its facilities were funded by the ALBA Grant, sponsored by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

During the opening at the facility, Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer noted that APUA is definitely on the way to ensuring a sustainable supply of water.

The plant will service the island's southern communities. On average, the release noted, APUA has to produce six million gallons of water to satisfy customers' needs. The Ffryes Beach plant will help maintain a constant supply of water year-
round, especially during the drought season.

A reverse osmosis plant removes the salt from sea water by pushing it through semi-permeable membranes. Currently, the plant can produce 600,000 imperial gallons per day.

The ALBA Grant has also facilitated the replacement of more than 75 percent of the transmission pipes around the island. Changing the pipes to PVC improves the quality and service of water.

The utility company said, "The citizens of Antigua and Barbuda can continue to look forward to many more improvements to the service and quality of the water they receive daily."

National Strategic Plan: Environment Demands Ministry

#5 John French II » 2011-12-01 21:39

Notes From A Native Son of Rock: Morris Right On! Youth, We had Salt Pans at Five Islands.
Quote:
What happens to the salt? The desalination plant typically uses three kilograms of seawater to produce 1 kilogram of fresh water. The extracted salt dissolves in the excess sea water used in the process to form so-called brine. The brine is returned to the sea where it is diluted again in its natural medium.
Can salt be recovered? The usual desalination processes do not provide for such recovery. Whereas they concentrate seawater 1.5 times, recovery of salt would require seawater to be concentrated ten times. Under such conditions the first crystals would appear in the brine. This would require a lot of energy and cannot be justified on an economic standpoint. Today whenever a large surface area is available close to a sunny seashore, salt pans, which make use of solar energy, are still the best method of salt production.

Is there any viable commercial plan(s) for the salt after extraction? Could be a source of revenue. Hint hint hint.

too much electricity to operate.

That's great, but how much electricity the plant is going to need to produce 600,000 gallons per day? It's a good thing that there will be another source for water, but I have to question the efficiency. Wind energy is most efficient way to operate reverse Osmosis plants, as they have an insatiable appetite for electricity. And that is a fact.
