Government’s First Renewable Energy Project Launched

Government’s First Renewable Energy Project LaunchedAntigua St. John's - The Government of Antigua & Barbuda has successfully partnered with the Organization of American States, the European Union, the governments of the United States of America and Germany through the regional CREDP project in the installation of a 6-kilowatt photovoltaic power system at the Nelsons Dockyard Shirley Heights Lookout.

The project is expected to provide electrical power to cover certain elements of the operations at the Lookout, one of the islands premier tourism entertainment centres.

General Manager at the Shirley Heights Lookout, Valerie Hodge, thanked the various agencies that had made the installation possible including the Office of the Prime Minister, APUA, and Public Works. She noted that the project constituted an important asset for the location, which was not connected to the existing APUA grid and was totally dependent on costly generator power to supply the various electricity needs.

The initiative received financial and technical assistance from the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) through the Organisation of American States (OAS) office.

The solar system is installed along the southerly slope of the Shirley Heights and is an element of the government’s efforts to promote the sustainable use of renewable energy in Antigua & Barbuda.

The company that installed mine is 'Caribbean Current' and they are located here in Antigua. I don't know the name of the two other companies as I threw away their info. We decided to go with the middle quote, there was one less expensive and one more expensive. Installation took a couple of weeks. Wind generation would not have been feasible in the area where I live and the noise would have driven me crazy!

SolarPowered, can you provide the name of the companies? My past (probably dated) research revealed that the panels (where electricity is concerned) currently tend to be too expensive. Wind power seems the best option on a commercial scale.

RE: Government’s First Renewable Energy Project Launched

I got a private company to install 11 solar panels on my roof. The system is in full operation and I can go online anytime and check to see how much each panel is putting out. They say it will cut my APUA electricity bill by 1/3. Because it hasn't been installed for an entire 'normal' output month yet I am still unsure if I will get 1/3 savings. If the Government power is OFF the system doesn't produce anything. The company also told me that with continuous daily use I will have paid for the system in 4.2 years. There are presently 3 companies that offer these systems in Antigua and before it goes fully operational it has to be vetted by APUA. It cost more or less the price of a cheap car in Antigua. :-|

Why Not A Public Building?

#7 Southern Beauty » 2013-01-28 13:34

Great initiative. Does anyone know why a PRIVATELY OWNED entity was chosen for this National project? Is it because of its location? Is this the best pot to collect data on the effectiveness and efficiency of the system? If not, why not the hospital, a school, a government building, or somewhere operated by National Parks? Wasn't Shirley Heights lookout on the list of private businesses that OWE APUA bill? Was this a way for them to get out of their debt? Hopefully more places will be selected that make more National sense. We seem to keep making the same dumb decisions to suit individuals instead of the collective. Antiguans and Barbudans wake up!

Drive around St. John's any night, have a keen look at the Government buildings including the schools, slao those in the villages and you will see lights on all night and to some extent, all day.Who pays or that? We the consumers of APUA. Government cannot pay it's bill so utility priced is hiked to help mitigate government inability to pay. Faced with that background why must assistance from a friendly country and regional institution that comes to us be siphoned off to a UPP supporter rather than to the benifit of our Country. xxxxx xxxx, the owner operator has been in operation for some time now. They should have made their own arrangement to purchase a system to provide the service to themselves and not to cxxxx the Nation out of **.

I thought this was done years ago. 27 jan 2011 an article states:

Quote:
Less than a week after releasing the draft National Energy Policy for stakeholder feedback, the Energy Desk has announced that the US State Department has approved grant funding for the installation of a solar/PV system at Shirley Heights Lookout. So it takes us over 2 years to do a simple project like this? Though a bit dissimilar, it took a plumber about a day to install a solar water heater system at my home which saves me at least 3KW daily (at least 100 EC monthly from my apua bill)

My electricity bill is $488, next month will be about another $400+ and this business owner that has made millions of dollars over the years gets this free. SMH....Antigua and Barbuda- the worst place for poor people to live.

So who's getting the break on their electricity bill with this? Instead of wasting 46 million on old Chinese power plants they should have put every red cent into this type of power generation and done it properly for the benefit of the whole of Antigua, not just one business place. Pathetic.
