Barbuda Sandmining Nears Disaster Levels

Barbuda Sandmining Nears Disaster LevelsAntigua St John's - There have been renewed calls for an end to sandmining operations in Barbuda, as this activity has reached a stage that could spell an environmental disaster for the sister island.

The call came from Council member and senator, Arthur Nibbs, who wants Chairman Kelvin Punter to urgently convene a village meeting to discuss the sandmining operations.

“The sandmining operation has reached the last ridge at Palmetto Point," Nibbs said. "This ridge serves as a breaker that protects the island from large waves that may be generated by storms. If this ridge is removed by sand mining, I fear that Barbuda would then be vulnerable to large waves and could lead to a disaster situation on the island."

He said the people of Barbuda should be involved in whatever decision is made, as the funds generated from mining support many jobs. “We have to determine whether or not we will go after the dollar, or act now to protect our environment, now, and in the future,” he said.

According to Nibbs, the Environmental Division conducted a study on the impact of sand mining on the Barbuda environment three years ago, and recommended that the operation should stop.

“Armed with that report, the Council met with the Cabinet to seek financial assistance for the island to replace the funds it would lose when the mining stops. The government gave us a commitment that it would assist, but it failed to live up to that commitment. Faced with that reality, the Council had no choice but to resume sandmining operations,” Senator Nibbs explained.

Now Nibbs said he firmly believes that sandmining should end, even though he recognises that it would have a severe economic impact. “We should stop the mining immediately," he said. "Even if it means that we go back to the government and make our case for assistance."

He disclosed that during the height of mining operations, the Council collected as much as $9 M annually. But he noted that this figure has been significantly reduced.

Nibbs is also raising concern about the garbage collection process on Barbuda. He said someone proposed to use his equipment to assist with the collection, but the Health and Safety Committee has not met since January to agree to the proposal.

I don't know why you all are talking about whether or not it should resume because they never stopped mining sand to begin with... barges full of sand have been coming across all the time

Where has all the money gone, if this operation has been making 9M a year and lets say that they have been around for the last 10 years thats 90M, so why is barbuda in such a bad state, these and other questions need answers.

You are making sense, but two wrongs don't make a right. Perhaps there is a reason that Barbudans distrust their compatriots from the mainland. Perhaps not. In either case we should still strive to do all we can to maintain the fragile union that seems to currently exist. I agree with your points on not begging hand outs. It is high time we take on the responsibility of building a successful nation upon ourselves.

Prevention better than cure!!!

I do not understand how sand mining in Barbuda becomes just a Barbuda "thing"!!! I am guessing that we as "Antiguans" should just sit back and watch while Barbuda's environment is destroy, twiddle our thumps and wait until it happens to "us"!!!
If we nip issues in the bud, it wouldn't bloom!!!

I said what i did because of my own encounters in Barbuda and dealing with Barbudans. Trust me, they don't like Antiguans and don't want us over there!! But it is our tax money that keeps them afloat, and they quick to ask for more of our tax money to help keep the island going. Antiguan's can't own land over there, or even start a business without having one of their Barbudan born involved.
Regarding unity within the region,The caribbean cannot unit because all we know to do is Beg for more, and then mis manage what is given to us and run it to the ground cuz theres not value to it for us since it was handed over. Untill we learn to do things for ourselves and stop relying on handouts from others, and stop trying to cut each others throats to gain a buck!! the islands won't unit because each island trying to out-do each other and undermine each other to try and gain more.
We need to be the ones to help each other, and stop waiting on our governements to beg the international countries to do everything for us

We live in the nation of Antigua AND Barbuda. There is no us and them. We are one people, it is of our tax money. If this is 'forward thinking' no wonder the Caribbean cannot unite.

Education

#2 Forward Thinker » 2012-03-22 08:13

The Barbudan's should of stopped this years ago. From the days when all those ministers sold millions of dollars worth of sand, and none of that money stayed in Barbuda. The Barbudans, who don't want Antiguan's to come over there and setup business or buy land, or do anything over there, now want US Antiguan Tax Payers to subsidize their lack of income!! Why not use whatever Education you have and setup a business to help yourselves?!?! Tours that tourist can take while they are on island. become a guide for persons who want to travel the island and see the beaches!! Figure out some other means of income other then asking the government to use our TAX MONEY to give the council to spend as they please!! diggin up sand can't be the only thing a person can do over there, so ya'll figure it out, and stop looking money from ppl you don't even want over there!!

The sand mining debacle is the result of mis-management, a lack of understanding ofthe enviornment and greed! Both the Barbuda Council and the Antigua led UPP Government are to be throughly blamed for this ecological and economic disaster. if there was propetr research and planning done, AND EXPERTS ON THE SUBJECT WAS LISTENED TO EVEN 5 YEARS AGO we would not be at this awful stage. As usual the UPP government is good at disaster creation!
