Antigua St John's - The Independence Steering Committee has announced details of the annual Homecoming Queen Show. But no sooner was the announcement made than there was an announcement of a rival show, the Miss Parish Queen 2011.
The shows are slated to take place just days apart, with the Parish Queen show on October 26 and the Independence Homecoming on October 28.
The Independence Homecoming Queen Committee had issued a statement saying that no rival show would be allowed to take place within the official 30th anniversary of Independence observance.
Later, a release from the Parish Queen organisers said they had decided not to proceed with their show.
On Thursday morning, Director of Culture Gilbert Laudat appeared on ABS TV's Good Morning Antigua & Barbuda to confirm that the organisers of the Miss Parish Queen Show had decided to call off their pageant after the intervention of Culture Minister Eleston "Namba" Adams.
But in a media release, Signature Events, an organisation headed by promoter Kirk Vhon Kelt, announced the launch of the rival pageant and said it had already selected its delegates, dubbed the Phenomenal Seven.

'crab's in a barrel
There is one thing that is certain in the life of huemans, and that is, "competition breeds ingenuity," plain and simple. However, I have come to the conclusion, that, we as Antiguans/Barbu dans/Redondans and others of African decent has allowed the word "COMPETITION" to have a derogatory and negative meaning in our planning and reasoning, in other words competition means war and as we all know, war is a detriment to any culture. It's about time that we take our thoughts and deeds out of the mental barrel which has encased us, and have us behaving like a bunch of crabs caught at Darkwood, placed in drums, ready to be boiled to make a lavish feast of "fungi & crab." Take a good look at our economy, even the Chinese have learnt to placed us in that virtual barrel and watch us claw, crawl, vomit and poop all over each other. However, with that said, having two pageants with the same premise at virtually the same is pure idiottic.

It will also allow for the creation of new businesses and the circulation of money in the economy, including the payment of much needed taxes. Food for thought Avid Reader

The contestants can do all kinds of fundraisers to raise monies if they are truly interested. Maybe it is this lack of involvement by the contestants why no one wants to sponsor them.

They major in minors
We are told that government must not get into activities which can be lead and undertaken by private enterprise, yet here they go, after their failure to secure sponsorship for a single delegate during carnival 2011, making declarations that they alone have the right to promote a Queen show for Independence.
I encourage the promoters to stand their ground and call on Antiguans to support the private effort while demanding that government concentrates its efforts and resources on the key/critical issues listed above.
