Special Guest To View Power Struggle

Dr King David GodwinHead of the Speech and Theatre Arts Department of Grambling State University (USA), Dr King David Godwin, will be on island this weekend for the staging of the Nazarene Drama Team’s fourth production, Power Struggle.

Writer and director of the play, Collin Jno-Finn, a student at GSU pursuing mass communication and theatre arts, said the production is part of his theatre degree internship and so he opted to host Dr Godwin here in Antigua so he can have a firsthand look at the production.

“Dr Godwin hails from Monroe, Louisiana, where GSU is located, and I thought it necessary to provide a Caribbean view of our theatre to Dr Godwin, since the theoretical and American view of theatre may differ based on varying situations and or tools," said Jno-Finn. “I am hoping that he will be able to garner information from the theatre fraternity so that there might be a possibility of providing him with a broader reality of theatre from a Caribbean perspective.”

In a press release from the Nazarene Drama Team, Dr Godwin said, “I am always eager to engage in activities that seek to educate the minds and hearts of individuals to the wonders of the arts." He said he is looking forward to being in Antigua and working along with drama groups to impart knowledge and thereby strengthening the arts.

Jno-Finn meanwhile expressed many thanks to Gilbert Laudat of the Department of Culture and Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, who came forward to support this venture. He also thanked LIME and the other contributors for supporting the production.

Power Struggle is Jno-Finn’s fourth play, and earned him an A last semester as part of his playwriting course. He has also written On the Block, Nine to Five, and It's Too Late.

Power Struggle tells the story of a young pastor facing expulsion from the church board, since seasoned board members have raised concerns about his inappropriate leadership. The pastor’s quest for a second term in office has met strong resistance from a powerful female member, who will stop at nothing to overthrow the young contemporary leader. The brilliant pastor, recognising that his dynasty is about to topple, must strategize to conquer one of his greatest battle.

The politicking strife among the warring factions escalates to boiling point, and threatens to wreck the stability of the organisation.

Power Struggle unfolds at the Dean William Lake Cultural Centre this weekend, Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 at 8 pm and 7 pm, respectively. Admission is $20.

Local talent starting to show its face

#3 Smart One » 2011-06-26 23:00

We have seen late an explosion of local talent in the theatre and drama productions. I must say that I really applaud this. I went to see Skin a few weeks ago and went to see Working Girl this week. Both movies were of a very good standard for what we know are very low budget movies. I think the producers of both movies did a very good job and they are making Antiguans proud. I must say thought that Working Girl was my favorite. Hope that the local population does give these productions all their support. They are on a good path. Lots of room for improvement but quite good so far, but that is with everything. Remember we are still very young in this industry and the funds are limited.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. This is Nation Building with a Purpose. My Warmest Congratulations to Colin Jno-Finn. Let those who constantly denigrate others, lampoon every Idea and question - knowing that there are no stupid questions or ideas when proffered with sincerity and conviction hear the words of Dr. Goodwin and learn
“I am always eager to engage in activities that seek to educate the minds and hearts of individuals to the wonders of the arts." Amen. I would add "to our Political Discourse" being mindful that the Good Doctor is a Guest in Our Fair Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda - Redonda?
