Antigua’s calypso icon, Rupert “King Swallow’’ Philo, has received another prestigious award as he celebrates 50 years in the calypso arena.
The State Senate of New York has issued a proclamation honouring Philo for his contributions to the art form, and in particular, his many years of association with the West Indian Carnival in New York City.
Senate Majority Leader Dean G Skelos, in the proclamation, said, inter alia, “Whereas Rupert ‘King Swallow’ Philo is well known as a humble, regular, unassuming individual who has a list of achievements that would make an Antiguan and Barbudan proud that he is a ‘son of the soil’ who has become their musical ambassador par excellence … now therefore, I, Senate Majority Leader, Dean G Skelos, on behalf of the New York State Senate, do hereby award this citation to Rupert ‘King Swallow’ Philo.”
This latest award followed the announcement that Philo has been recommended for a knighthood at the upcoming Independence Award Ceremony.
