Bird Calls for Knighthood for Swallow

King SwallowAntigua St John's - Former prime minister Lester Bird plans to nominate a noted Antiguan, Rupert Philo, better known as King Swallow, for knighthood during the upcoming Independence celebrations.

In the following release, Bird chronicles King Swallow’s lengthy career, and makes his case for awarding him the nation’s highest honour.

Known the world-over as King Swallow, Rupert Philo was born on February 14, 1942, in the historic village of Willikies, in the Parish of St. Phillip, Antigua and Barbuda. His singing talent was discovered at birth when his loud cry was noted by the midwife. “This baby is going to be a singer,” she proclaimed. His friend Jerome Ramsey encouraged him during boyhood days; and his church served as a nurturing platform.

Rupert Philo began competing in the calypso art form when still a youth, in 1961. His very first hit, entitled Raphael Trujillo, recalled the story of a dictator of the Dominican Republic whose maltreatment of migrant workers from Antigua and Barbuda was re-told upon their return home. By capturing their story in song, Swallow has immortalized the phenomenon of the Antiguan and Barbudan migrant worker, while showing disgust for Latin dictators. He called Trujillo “a wicked man”; he noted how he compelled migrant workers “to put every cent in Trujillo’s hand, before you leave the land.” His Raphael Trujillo calypso in 1961 could be deemed the birth of the political calypso in Antigua and Barbuda.

Swallow’s Party In Space also captured a historic period in humanity’s drive to conquer space by rocketry. The boundaries which kept humans tied to planet earth were broken in 1961 when the Russians successfully launched Sputnik. Swallow’s calypso also broke through a barrier by making space conquerable by calypso. He brought music, song and dance to space travel, relying upon a calypso that lives on today.

Swallow’s philosophical and enlightened outlook was expressed in Man To Man, Dawn of a New Day, One Love One Destiny, We Marching and a plethora of other songs which were written by him and modified only slightly by the requirements of the accompanying music. He was as good a writer as he was a thinker and singer. He loved the calypso art form and he mastered it.

Not surprisingly, he penned other calypsos that were intended solely to entertain and to enable dancing. Don’t Stop This Party, Fire In The Back Seat, I Want To Wine On Something, and scores of others which the partygoers and disc jockeys loved, helped to show his playful side. Swallow therefore created appeal for his music by moving it across the spectrum, capturing thoughtfulness and playfulness in their magnificence.

If it could be said that Swallow moved across the genres within the art form seamlessly, his songs expressing support for Vere Cornwall Bird and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party were rock solid and immovable. Swallow’s Pappa Bird and If You Can’t Run The Country: Give It To Labour Party are expressions of his unshakeable support for the political party that has managed the affairs of the state beginning with adult suffrage, in 1951, and only twice interrupted in 60 years.

Swallow has cast his vote in every election for the candidate put forward by the Labour Party, including the incumbent Robin Yearwood. Swallow has joined pickets and marches organized by the ALP to protest unacceptable actions by the Walter and Spencer administrations. Rupert Philo has never flinched, never sneered, he has held the scarlet banner high, and will no doubt continue to live beneath its shade until he is called to the Great Beyond.

King Swallow was awarded the Order of Merit (Gold), and the Grand Cross of Princely Heritage during terms of governance under the Labour Party. Each award was conferred in recognition of his sterling contribution to the calypso art form.

I plan to write to the Governor General advising her that, under the powers conferred on the Leader of the Opposition by the National Honours Law, I nominate Rupert Philo, King Swallow, to receive the highest honour, in this the 30th year of Antigua and Barbuda’s independence. For his 50 years of artistry and excellence, Rupert Philo is to be awarded the honour of Knight Commander.

Henceforth, he will be Sir Rupert Philo, King Swallow. Congratulations.

Greetings!

Not only should he be knighted, but to put plans in the works to be accepted as a hero for the people of Antigua & Barbuda and be given a world life achievement award especially from there Governments of Caricom.

As a naturalized honorary citizen of The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, may I say this with utmost boldfaceness, that he should be invited to T & T for their 50th Anniversary of Independence next year, to be the first International Calypso artists outside of T & T to come and receive an award for giving the world so much love with your music.

As the undisputed Road March King of New York's Labor Day carnival also, Swallow as he is humble called by his loyal fans, who also could put down a “mean fish” brother. I want to say this my brother from the bottom of my heart… continue to give the world your joys and that you and your family stay blessed.

To the people of Antigua & Barbuda! You have a jewel no one can take away. Thank you.

It's amazing

First of all when I last checked the nations highest honour is "National Hero". So I don't know why Caribarena and the Hon Lester Bird is saying that Knight Commander is our nations highest honour. To be honest I think our knighthood is watered down and does not mean anything nowadays. In Jamaica for example the legendary Robert Nesta Marley aka Bob Marley was awarded the Order of Merit (OM) in 1981, which is Jamaica's third highest honor. Imagine that!!! The man who basically put Jamaica on the map musically and culturally (not to mention all the tourist who go there annually to see his museum, studio and home). Yet he was only awarded the 3rd highest honour, they don't even see it necesarry to knight the biggest and most successful musician in this hemisphere. But we see it fit to knight 2 Calypsonians who are barely known outside of the Calypso fan zone!!! I wonder how many knighthoods Antigua & Barbuda has been awarded since Independance ... the list should be very interesting!!!

Highest Honour???

#14 Lester Baldwin Bird » 2011-07-14 18:41

Swallow , Short Shirt, and even Obstinate should be awarded national honours. But not knighted for singing and dancing on stage. if they are to be knighted you have to base it on what they did for the country. Burning Flames, Tizzy, Claudette, Tian, & Young Destroyer all went and represent Antigua world wide should we knight them in the future also? We have to look and see what they did in their community, did they give back to the art form? do they tutor kids? Do they sponser or help others? Most of their songs were not even written by them, so why not knight the writers and musicians also??? Lester Bird is the father of modern Antigua & Barbuda (like it or not) and it is hard to find anyone who is still alive that did more than he did for the development of Antigua & Barbuda yet he is not knighted and was actually REFUSED a knighthood!!!

PLM leave the politics

#13 Avid Reader » 2011-07-12 13:03

Come on PLM, he should be honored for what he did, none of these current crop of artists can compete with what Short Shirt, Swallow and Obsti has done and that is a shame. He deserves this, no matter what the reason for the submission.

I wish PLM was at the show saturday night to see Min Ascot Michael sitting in the PM SUV A30419 Toyota Prado with him most of the night. So when you calling folks yard fowl maybe you should include your loving UPP politicians. I think a few people where surprised when Mr. Michael stepped out of the SUV for a minute. Mr. PM will not object as he has a fondness for Swallow as he was instrumental in personal donations to show on saturday night.

why

#7 Rupert j » 2011-07-11 15:35

What is the significance of a warding anyone such a title I understand and appreciate the work of the mighty swallow but to be awarding him or anyone that way is just frivilous. I say give him the highest award the country has but leave all this knighthood alone because it carries no weight whatsoever.

#6 Cancer » 2011-07-11 11:51

Shouldnt he be "judge / nominated" by the songs he sang, the way he sang those songs and his contribution to Antigua and Barbuda over all these years and not by what color he wears and who he voted for?
GZZZZ every thing has to do with politics for you people!!!!

No Mr. PM; Swallow is not deserving

#4 PLM » 2011-07-11 10:00

This ALP yard fowl failed miserable at the # 1 job of any calypsonian; he failed to provide any condemnation, critique, satire or commentary on the ALP during the three decades of corruption, oppression, or mismanagement. Let Lester “nuff ‘n edge up” Bird ge’ he a red comrade badge.

Cool Ruler,

To be fair, I believe it was “Passport” Benjamin who put forward Lard Ponzi’s name for the knighthood, not Lester.

Even thou everyone knows that swallow is a staunch laborite who has never sang an anti-government song while the ALP was in power I think he deserve a knighthood and after listening to the PM Saturday night at the event, I know he will not have a problem with it. It's **y that Bird saw it fit to nominate nefarious characters like Stanford and his speech writer in the past while a proud son of the soil was overlooked and now using this one for political mileage
