Singing Althea to Represent Antigua

Antigua St. john's - The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) has announced that Althea “Queen Singing Althea” Williams will represent Antigua & Barbuda at the 2nd Annual Regional Female Calypso Monarch Competition on Friday, December 21, 2012, in Montserrat.

The promoters of the show are Euphony Vibes. The competition is the headline event of Montserrat’s 50th Festival Celebrations.

Queen Singing Althea will compete against the reigning monarch, Minelle from St Lucia; Tasha P from Dominica, last year’s first runner-up; Shea Shea from Anguilla; Chrystal Cummins-Beckles from Barbados; Shaunelle Mckenzie from St Vincent; Joycelyn “Sista Joyce” Searles from BVI; and Sylvina “Kandie” Malone from Montserrat.

The contenders will vie for the title crown, as well as a trip to London sponsored by Cool & Smooth of Antigua, and a cash prize of EC$8,000.

The First Runner-Up will receive EC$5,000 and Second Runner-Up EC$3,000. Unplaced contestants will receive EC$500 each.

Annette Aflak, Events Manager at the National Festivals Office, said Williams’ participation is made possible by the CDC.

“The CDC is extremely pleased to support Queen Singing Althea. As a part of the support, they will pay her airfare and also cover the expenses for her chaperone. Euphony Vibes will assume all of Queen Singing Althea’s expenses once she arrives in Montserrat,” Aflak said.

Singing Althea’s third-place finish in this year’s Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch competition made her the highest ranked female calypsonian for the year, hence her selection, Alfak explained.
