Antigua St. John's - Tiana ‘Titi’ Edwards ... that's the name of Antigua’s newest music sensation taking the airwaves by storm with a genre of music not quite unique to the Caribbean - Rap.
Caribarena spoke with the young singer who is the daughter of local musical legend King Onyan Edwards of the acclaimed ‘Burning Flames’ and “Red Hot Flames” bands.
The 16-year-old, who admits to being bizarrely antisocial, began her career in the public light as a model for Bodi Arte modeling agency. This is where she got her stage name ‘Titi’.
Just last month the young star released her debut single, quite fittingly titled ‘New Product’. The release is essentially a Hip-Hop single with a crossover reggae twist.
Carrez ‘Cobweb’ Warner produced the track, which features popular local artist Promise No Promises. The song, available on YouTube, is currently being released on radio stations across the Caribbean.
“I love to rap and I don't know why. It's just a part of me. I don't know why hip-hop,” was the simple answer Edwards could provide to the obvious question of “why hip hop”.
“Most people know me as Onyan’s daughter and automatically think that if I do decide to sing I would follow in his soca foot steps. But I just have a love for pop and rap music and even gospel sometimes,” she said. “Let's just say that I came out different.”
The Princess Margaret 5th Form Student says that although music is her first love, her education is an area of development that she is not prepared to ignore. She plans to pursue nine subjects at the next CSEC examinations.
“Music sparks my interest. It has been around me my whole life. I’m a great model, especially on the runway, but music is always most important - after school of course,” she said.
When asked what’s next for her career ‘Titi’ said she has just recently wrapped up her second single, and that too will be making its way onto the local and regional airwaves in short order.
“The next move is going to be crazy. I just finished another song and I’m already performing at events in Antigua,” she said.
Her aspirations in the music arena go beyond local or even regional stages, as she seeks to stand beside female legends in the genre internationally at some point in her career.
