WAR Moves on Lyrics Promoting Violence

WAR Moves on Lyrics Promoting ViolenceAntigua ST. John's - A group of activists will meet in St. John's on Friday to decide on a broad-brush approach toward dealing with artistic expressions that promote violence and other criminal behaviour against women and others.

The meeting will involve representatives of the lobby group - Women Against Rape (WAR) - which recently led the charge to ban the contentious song “Kick Een She Back Doh”, which subsequently won the Road March title during the just-ended Carnival celebrations.

"The next step is to prevent reoccurrence of the situation where it would appear as though we targeted a particular artiste. We want it as broad-based as a possible so that each song would get the same treatment," said WAR spokesperson Alexandrina Wong.

Wong has been harshly criticised for speaking out against the popular Toriano "Onyan" Edwards song. On the flip side, Wong said, she was bombarded with calls from persons, including victims, who were "appalled" with the lyrics.

The WAR spokesperson acknowledged that her group appears to have gotten "the raw end of the deal", but said they made strides in lifting people's awareness of the lyrical content of songs.

"I am happy that some media houses found it necessary to not play the songs, and I want to commend them for that," she said.

"Any song, any form of artistry that speaks to violence against women, we will not tolerate and we will speak out against it," she said, citing the national observance in April of the National Sexual Assault campaign themed ‘Speak Out’.

The activist maintained that the group never targeted the Burning Flames lead singer, but was simply concerned about the implications on the tune, which she said, had a devastating effect on women who were sexually assaulted after their "doors were broken down" and their homes invaded.

She also asserted that the bashing her group received would not deter its advocacy work.

As it relates to the clergy, she said: "the silence was deafening and definitely surprising."

According to Wong, there are several lessons learned from the situation.

"Persons need to be more conscious of who they are, how they see themselves, how other people see them. That should inform an individual of the quality of life that he or she wants, including for members of their family and their community. In addition, it has also shown that while a number of persons may not be in favour of a situation that is taking place, they will not come forward and voice their opinions publicly for a number of reasons best known to themselves," she noted.

"We're urging persons to really look at what is happening around them and take a stand. The same quality of life you would want for yourself, you should want for other persons," the WAR spokesperson urged.

Are songs of this type unique to Antiguan culture or to burning flames? It is amazing how the filth from North America and even Jamaica gets glorified by some here who are now holier than thou.
If the government decides to block some of the porn sites on the internet we will then start to here about freedom of expression and how we are becoming like China.
Instead of going after this one song go after the whole filthy industry_ local and foreign.

Maybe it's taking WAR a bit longer to understand Antiguan "culture" than me, but I saw this a good two decades ago.

Antigua glorifies the losers and the least common denominators in their "society".

How else would you explain those who rise to the top of that "society"? Government? Business? "Culture"????

When you exempt 51% of the population from consideration, you can't help but ending up in the bottom half!!

Who here is surprised? When "Lord of the Flies" is confused with "Government", "Culture", or "Independence", the result is inevitable.

My question is why aren't the British being called to account for the mess they left the rest of the world to deal with??

Full respect to WAR and the commenters here who 'get it'. The song is truly disgusting and offensive and clearly incites violent crime against women. It should have been banned by the legal authorities, not CDC, for inciting law-breaking.

Just take a minute to think how this song winning an award will be viewed overseas. A woman screaming and lyrics that encourage rape, of any kind, will not seen as some sort of amusing cultural expression by the rest of the world, it will be seen as a sympton of a sick, **ed, backward, ignorant people who have no respect for women and who think that home invasion and rape are something to be sung about and giggled at. Proud Antguans should stand up and be counted on this one otherwise tourists and potential investors will be, quite justifiably, repulsed, horrified and detered from visiing or having anything to do with this place.

As in the case of our National festival, to target lyrical content only is prejudicial, and a pandora's box is been opened for it then allows any and every Civic association to approach the Regulatory Agency's and ask for a ban/ regulation on any of the following, the costumes depicted as mas, g-strings and bra, especially worn by males offend many within our society, yet this is the artistic creation of the designer, the style of dance as is so illustriously depicted by a graffic artist, is ab expression of their art, the consumption of alcohol, especially by underage drinkers offends many, and the list is infinite, therefore the Legal System should be bombarded with litigation if an artist expression is regulated. This is why movies, videos, cd's, radio/tv stations have rating systems. RATE ARTFORM, REGULATE THE MEDIUM THAT PRESENTS THE ARTFORM.

very THIN line...

#8 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-08-10 15:28

Greetings, I commend WAR for taking a 'stance,' and this is what Freedom, free will affords us, and as one famous artist says, " everyone has a right to decide their own destiny, " and most democratic system of governance agrees with this, at least in theory. An artist, once considers such, and for the 9 lives of this black cat, I am yet to understand who set the criteria's for one to become an Artist, since "beauty is in the eye of the beholder or better yet, one person's trash, is another's treasure." So herein, lies a dilema.
Artistic expression's cannot and should NOT be regulated "simply because," what can be regulated and should be regulated, are the mediums which they are presented in. That is, TV, radio, books etc. What this means, a company be it, a book store, a radio/tv station are licensed by the Regulatory Agency's based upon the content of the material they want to present to the public. The public, having free will/choice makes that determination as to what they want to watch, listen to, buy etc.

So why listen a song all the way through only to end up crying because it offended you? If it was offensive from the start, why did you continue to listen?

CDC powers limited?

#6 Dig It » 2012-08-10 11:34

Looking at the culture in this country, you will find that many people "gravitate" to music of violence and indecency, especially, against women! Some would say this is "freedom of expression" or freedom of artistic" expression with our artists. Others will say if you don't like the song don't buy it or listen to it. Yet, the fact remains, many members of the public, especially, women, are "petrified" by the lyrical content of the song, "Kick Een She Back Doh" or the "copycats" who may carry-out the violence in it! And, as some of you know, the CDC "banning" of the song was way out of their league (hmmm, since when?...forgot that Dr Mongoose likes to be in control)! According to the Chairman, Quote:
"The CDC can not act unless we have been given the directive from the minister, and to date, we have not been told to do so”
www.antiguaobserver.com/?p=78818
Amazing that the Minister has been "tight-lipped" on the matter, as he has no rush to put anything in the "dust-bin" unless it is VC!

Women Against Rape

#3 tenman » 2012-08-10 09:59

Women Against Rape, keep up the good job. As a father, I find the song and the sick culture its a symptom of, offensive. We need more persons like WAR. Our nation needs to do more in shaping the kind of people the national anthem calls for. One method can be more shows via the media particularly ABS TV, showing where we are and where we need to go.

Everybody knows that the present Christian Council has been neutered! I'm ashamed to be part of them! I think the whole thing should be disbanded! It is clearly controlled by elements of the UPP!

May God Bless the people of Antigua and Barbuda in general, and the poor, sick and homeless in particular.
