If I could scribble little hearts and roses all over this page, it would describe how I was feeling after watching Just Wright.
It's easy to get caught up in this movie, although the storyline doesn't feel new, but somehow puts an irresistibly cute twist on the underdog versus the beauty queen contestant.
This Cinderella is, however, no string of spaghetti. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, the full-figured, down-to-earth physical therapist who aesthetically doesn't stand a chance against light-skinned, gold digging dream girl Morgan, played by Paula Patton. The fact that the two are god-sisters, and friends, makes it more interesting.
Appearances by screen divas Pam Grier and Phylicia Rashad as the matrons add weight to the cast, which also features several familiar faces in the NBA.
Common plays basketball "Prince Charming" Scott McKnight, and does an outstanding job of making any woman wish she could net a guy like him.
I hadn't planned to see this movie, I'll admit, until it seemed everyone was telling me how good it was. One friend compared it to Love & Basketball, which still gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling (maybe it was the soundtrack, sniff) when I picture Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps falling in love.
If you remember another Sanaa Lathan film, Something New (2006), then you can connect the dots, since its director, Sanaa Hamri was also at work on Just Wright.
