CP and Tian take Top Spots

LIME Party Monarch Saturday night’s LIME Party Monarch finals will go down in the record books as one of the best attended events on the 2010 Carnival line-up. It was sheer pandemonium at Carnival City, as scores of patrons filled the inside and outside of the grounds, anxious to see who would take the Groovy and Jumpy crowns.

Fighting hard to retain her artistic credentials after a year-long hiatus, Claudette “CP” Peters had no plans to be whitewashed, and with her outstanding performance of Still Jamming, she revived her winning streak - at least one half of it, winning the Groovy part of the competition.

With CP back in the game, many wondered if last year’s champion, Tian Winter, would have the magic ingredient to outshine the highly acclaimed soca queen. In the end, he held his own, winning the Jumpy Party Monarch title performing his song, Hurricane.

The supporters of the 15 Party Monarch finalists were out in their numbers, and the show was not for one minute short of theatrics, mLIME Party Monarch aking the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) even more of a spectacle.

Think crazy costumes, quirky stage props, harnesses, and fireworks; not to mention the electrifying performances.

Known for his controversial tunes and outfits, Lord Satalyte’s Throat Cancer interjected his usual shot of comic relief.  Not only did he make people laugh, dance and face their fears of “contracting throat cancer,” he also placed in the second runner-up position in both the Groovy and Jumpy sections.

Also quite noteworthy were performances by newcomers Ricardo Drue, Drastic, Hard Knox and Laurena. Drastic’s Sugary Waistline has been a party favourite this Carnival season.

Guest performances from the competition’s semi-finalists, Dr Paul and D’ Anchor, and an appearance by a shirtless, 2X4-toting CDC chairman were among the happenings on Saturday night.

Winning in the LIME Party Monarch competition automatically guaranteed places for CP and Tian in the semi-finals of the soca competition in Trinidad scheduled for early next year. The unplaced contestants will also be eligible to enter that competition.

This year’s grand prize was not a car, as is usually the case. Prior to the staging of the show, reports from the Ministry of Culture hinted at cash prizes instead, but no official word has been received.

The singing or the voice is not the problem when it comes to the party monarch, on the other hand groovy you should be able to sing and a good voice wouild'nt hurt.
I think the songs that satalyte sings Papi,Throat cancer, raw sole and the one when he climb up the mango tree are all of the same comedic field, where most fans will laugh instead of jump or wave.
One go to a party monarch with a flag or rag and ready to jump, wave, wine and even run. Now listen to Throat cancer did you guys really feel that energy that a party song suppose to let off.
I know the Flames brothers can't do no wrong and it seems we sympathize with Satalyte more so, but we need to give everyone there equal support or alot of great artiste will just fade away.
Cp and Satalyte placed because they both have there fans and no matter what to them they sound great, Satalyte just need to change his writing a little realizing it's party monarch,we don't even need alot of lyrics just a jumpy pitch.

Well i must say i agree with most of the feedback i am getting from this article..The first thing CDC needs to do is kindly ask all the judges from all the shows who have been judging competitions from inception of carnival to 2010 not to re apply for next carnival. then they need to start advertising for application for judges for next year carnival from now.... then have them all trained.... same judges every year and it is not fear to the competitors.

However congratulations to Tian and CP even though i didnt see CP doing anything to win or even place...

The old 2 the new

#13 Soca 2.0 » 2010-08-04 05:13

The problem with the competition is a two part issue. The judges and the people. Antiguan people are to bias against there own, love favoritism. They seem to be locked in a old way of thinking. Cp is a good artist but for the most part lack quality material. I agree we have to put forth the best of our country, its soca music not antiguan music. As a people we have to get serious about marketing and promoting the best of antigua. Im proud of tian, tizzy, cp, and other fresh blood that has injected new sounds and style with in the music. For to long all we had was flames and they became the staple of what music is perceived to be on the island. Lord satalyte had a very entertaining performance, but its not a song that would sell $$$$. Soca is not just for carnival, soca is a business and no different than RnB, hip hop, or reggae.

"jumpy"? Groovey?

Maybe better catagories would be "screechy" , "scarey" , and "absolutely no sence of pitch, rhythm, or musical ability"?

If Antigua were to establish these criteria for international competition, Antiguans would be world champions!!!!

Who really won?

#11 Pellucid » 2010-08-03 14:30

So the real question is, what was the criteria for judging?

Is it the best "Antiguan", which would be judged on their ability to sreech, wail and whine enough to make God herself take her wrath out on a tiny island and infest it with birds, Spencers, Vescos, and Stanfords or an actual ability to sing in tune?

Judging by Antigua's history since being kicked out of the UK, I'm going to guess the former.

Just want to add.... if the writer of the article was at the competition, they would have heard the gentleman from Trinidad announce that the winner of the Groovy would go to the semi finals, but the winner of the Jumpy goes straight to the finals.

Let me just say, I was there, and Lord Satelyte was the only performer that had and kept the audience full attention throughout both of his songs. The place just came alive..... Sorry that people just don't see that this man is a true entertainer.... ..

Its Called a Soca Competition for a Reason......

#6 Stop it » 2010-08-02 11:09

Stop it. Its not possible for lord satellite to win. As much as i luv him as an entertainer he cannot sing neither can he represent us outside of Anu with these songs. Come on. Think outside of Antigua. Can you imagine hearing the representative of Anu Singing "Ok Papi" or "Throat Cancer" in any competition regionally with any chance of winning. Come on. I do agree though that he is being treated unfairly. He should not be allowed in a competition that he should never win. He can stage an entertaining performance and receive prizes for this. But lets face it, he just can't sing.

Lord Satalyte will never win, why? because he carnt sing, bottom line it is a singing competition. If he did not win with "pappy" he will never win. I think Ricardo Drue did very well in the Jumpy section but Antiguan people hard fu please boy! Maybe next time. CP should not have won the groovy thats for sure (i missed half of it, I could not get in the grounds for the ridiculous line!) But I did see her performance and it was crap not mention, the jumpy section thats was even worse! But a so e go.....

Did de Bear win? No he didn't

#4 Wow » 2010-08-02 01:13

De Bear was handed the crown. His melee was just that MELEE. his songs are lyrically weak but strong on what we like to hear...MELEE. The rewritten version lacks order and common sense, that is the story line is flawed big time.
I think Richie did well enough, Dr. Principal was there too and Kaseba put down his foot. But the are not popular and don't have ppl in radio stations pushing them. On another note I must say that this piece is better written than the Observer diatribe on their site today....too opinionated and personal attacks.

What you expect?

#3 Soca Lover » 2010-08-02 01:12

With so many of the groovy judges having the last name Peters or Peterson of course CP won. She is the first person who didn't sing her song and win a competition. Performance is important but you should sing more than Do Do Do Do to win. As for Tian, whether or not you like the song (a Trinidad production) he had the crowd going the most. My problem with Party Monarch is that the crowd seems to have made up their mind before the show. No matter how hard Ricardo Drue tried the crowd barely budged. The minute CP says hi, everyone goes crazy. Samoya performed WELL but you couldn't tell so from the crowd. My ranking:
Groovy : Lord Satellyte, Ricardo Drue, CP Jumpy: 1st Tian, 2nd Lord Satellyte, 3rd Samoya

better judging

#1 Dig It » 2010-08-02 00:52

If the judges really want people to support the carnival, they need to start judging the competitions fairly! I don't see CP winning the groovy, and I don't Tian winning the Jumpy. Lord Satalyte the time will come when you will take that crown! Last night competition was very good! I enjoyed it very much. However, I don't understand why the judges would placed Princess Thalia, and her father, Zacari, in front of Young Destroyer, Richie Francis, Kaseba, or even Dr. Principal! I am I the only one who see it that way? Anyway, Kudos to the De Bear!!!
