Party Monarch First in Carnival Payouts

Carnival PayoutsAntigua St John's - The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) is working to settle its multi-million dollar debt to performers and service providers for Carnival 2011.

Culture Minister Eleston Adams said the Party Monarch competitors are first in line for the payout, followed by the calypsonians.

He said the delay was due to the poor state of government's finances, brought on by the prevailing economic difficulties.

The problem has been compounded because the private sector has not been able to sponsor Carnival-related events as it has in the past.

Manager at the Festivals Office Richard Apparicio confirmed that payments to Party Monarch competitors started last Friday, and will continue until all participants have received their prize monies.

The total owed to competitors and service providers is $2.1 M. Of that amount, $781,000 is owed to the Party Monarch competitors.

The amount owed to calypsonians meanwhile is $132,000, Pageant contestants are owed $40,000, Steelband Association $182,000 and the Mas Association $630,000.

Apparicio said payments to other groups will begin as soon as the funds are released from the Treasury.

In addition, the Carnival official confirmed that the reigning Party Monarch, Hard Knoxx, who is representing the country at the International Soca Monarch competition in Trinidad in February, will not receive any official support.

"The competition in Trinidad (held during that country's Carnival celebrations) is a private venture, and thus there's no support from either the CDC or the Treasury. Only if it was organised by the T&T CDC would we have offered our assistance," Apparicio said.

There have been doubts about whether Hard Knoxx would be able to travel to Trinidad, but he has said that since he received his prize money, it would help fund his participation in the competition.

Apparicio added that planning for Carnival 2012 has not yet started, as a CDC is yet to be appointed.

When are we going to get things right in this country, it is the beginning of the year and nothing is in place to put carnival on a solid footing, if this not a joke I dont know what is. This guy mamba seems to be a one man band he is involve in everything and he just keep messing things up. At the end of august everyone involved in carnival should be have paid not 6, 8 months and sometime 12 and participants are still waiting. The first rule of thumb is that there has to an operation budget from which to start and that is reviewed each and every year this is business 101, you just cant run an organization in such a willy milly way and expect to succeed it just does'nt work.

Is not you one that heard the clip. In fact it was on observer AM with Anika Kentish he said so. She was interviewing Tian Winter and Mr. Adams called in and said how they supporting Hard Knoxx and how he leaving for Trinidad on the 9th. I can't remember if it is the 9th of January or February but I do remember he said the 9th. He said Hard Knoxx and his entire Juggle fu life crew was going so I don't know what is that. Why go on the radio and say all of that to now say "Arwe nah support you cause its a private venture". :-?

The Last Paragraph

#3 The Wadadli Blogger » 2012-01-11 08:54

The last paragraph says it all. That is exactly why the Carnival is not growing. Six months away from Carnival and they didn't even name a committee yet. They should already have the committee running, logo & slogan done, and commercial ads ready and blazing in USA, Uk & Canada already. The internet should be bombarded already also. Why do they have so many people working in the festivals office & ministry of culture and they are not doing nothing to enhance Carnival. That is our biggest festival. It should have year to year management and attention. The Comittee should have 2 year term limits or be chosen right after the previous committee submits it's report on the past Carnival.

Why is the Soca Monarch contestants prize money so high? Is that a typing error? At $781,000 between 24 finalists That is an average of over $30,000 per contestant. Where as the Calypso Monarch is $132,000 between 12 finalists at about an average of $11,000 per contestant.

The Minister of Culture was also happy that Antigua along with Barbados and St.Vincent was the only three island to get a free pass straight to the soca finals.
But Minister Adams this might just be your final free pass, cause when i sit back and listen the tunes out of TnT and then you mention Barbados and St.Vincent and then listen this Kentucky tune, i have nothing against Hard Knoxx but he should just give CP or Tian the ticket and try to learn the artform some more. Even the three big names tried before Tizzy, CP and Tian with great tunes and still couldn't cut it.
I do hope they have a great management team cause they gonna need alot of exposure ie TV time, Radio, Shows and Fetes and for the few Carnivals i've been to for 2011, the exposure is yet to arrive.

economy

I do believe i saw a news clip on ABS TV with the Minister of Culture MP Adams, claiming that the culture department not only assist Hard Knoxx but all five in the crew with airfare and hotel to Trinidad. So once again conflicting stories coming from an office of Government.
Maybe Caribarena could check this out.
I do believe that late July early August has to be the only weeks where our economy see a bit of growth each year. Hotels, Guest houses, Restaurants, Bars and Clubs, Clothing stores, Supermarkets, even the departure taxes at the airport climbs, not forgetting the different Rentals and the carnival shows by themselves bring in enough no matter what the entrance fee is.
So why not invest more in our Carnival and let's truly make it the world's greatest summer festival and paying the Artistes on time each year will be best way to start.
