Carnival Opening A Let Down

Carnival-Opening-A-Let-DownAttendees have been complaining about the lacklustre opening of Carnival 2010. While they have been quick to commend the Carnival Development Committee for honouring the nation's legends and heroes, they have been eager to point out the shortcomings of the opening parade, which they say lacked theme and rhythm.

Saturday’s moderate turnout at Carnival City was indicative of the public’s disillusion with the festival.

“What’s this,” one patron, Ian Carr, asked. “This is what Carnival comes to?" He pointed to the sparse crowd which managed to assemble inside the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

The only time the crowd seemed to take an interest was when the finalists in the junior calypso monarch, teenage pageant, queen of carnival and party monarch took to the stage.

Attendees are still wondering, however, why the calypso monarch finalists did not appear on stage after King Zacari made his obligatory appearance.

Neither the MC nor the CDC explained the nine finalists' non-appearance. Long before the parade reached the ARG, the disjointed flow had petered out into a free-for-all. T-shirt revellers were too busy enjoying themselves to stay abreast with the queue.

So slow was the procession that CDC Chairman Vaughn Walter had enough time to leave the parade and change from his street attire into a jacket and tie. By the time the ceremony began inside the grounds, the jam bands were still crawling up Independence Drive.

Walter, as usual, did his best to endear confidence that the season will be a good one, and a success. He noted that “budget cuts” had not stopped the CDC from doubting its critics, and promised they would deliver.

It is now left for those competing and participating to make the season a memorable one.

Culture Minister Eleston “Namba” Adams struck a harmonious chord when he appealed to revellers not to get caught up in the Burning Flames/Red Hot Flames feud which threatens to overshadow the festival.

He described the songs by the feuding brother as “misguided,” and called on their respective fans to show restraint.

Scotiabank’s continued sponsorship of the opening festivities should be commended, and the AIDS Secretariat and the HIV Network's involvement sent a timely message to revellers that unprotected sex is a no-no.

Honouring national legends and giants was commendable, but attendees complained that to only offer them two season tickets to witness the shows is just a drop in the bucket, apart from parading them on a float.

"The CDC needs to give them more tangible recognition for the contribution they have made to the festival," one patron said. "No one is asking for house and land, but it is about time the long overdue Hall of Fame be set up to pay deserving homage to the stalwarts who continue to make their contribution in whatever form or fashion."

It is now up to the queen contestants to give Carnival a royal send-off on Monday night.

So we offer nothing different to trini. brazil, and who ever else we copying. Still we brand it as an international money maker. I say if we are still going to go about it the way we have been, we need to stop doing it for a while. If we are going to change our methodology and redefine it as our Local festival of cultural expreshon to make local money, we may continue, in the hope that it will be again international. but we need to focus on building our local expreshon to a level where it again becomes unique, and one that makes money for us here first, then we might capture some semblance of internationalis m in our festival....Sto p Lie Stop Lie..bring back kultcha to the carnival...

CArnival Was started to boost the local economy by the people who owned the local economy.
It evolved by participation to be a show case of cultural expreshon. the main cultural language being Afro Antiguan. Some one realised in the seventies that Caribbean Tourism had a niche for the Euro American markets and therefore began defining our summer festival of making local currency to an international expose hoping to make foreign dollars. that was then. Social ineptitude, has evolved some generations who do not care for cultural expreshon which is unique.

Seriously, y'all expected any better from Namba? Ineptness at its best. Plus, the government doesn't realize that the people are BROKE and FED UP. I doubt if you give away the carnival tickets for free anybody would go. People feel supporting carnival is supporting the government and we all know the people deffinitely DON'T DO THAT!

#15 Kelly » 2010-07-26 04:53

They need to get rid of all of them. From Mr La La La to those in CDC. When the late Reginal Knight was in charge of carnival, we had carnival then. What they have now can't even be called carnival. Do one cares like before. Listening to some of the music that the children were dancing to on stage, I have to wondered where did we go wrong. I am not even 50 or close to 50 and I still remember when Children Carnival was about the children with many of them having innoence in there performance. I don't remember the MC was trying out for any of the talents spots like this one. It a shame such a shame!>:(

I hear Alister calling for a symposium again, I recall the same Alister holding one at Royal Antiguan some years ago, and it turned out to be just a talk shop, nothing came out of it. They are not serious and do not appreciate the economic impact that this festival has had on the nation’s economy over the years. Unless something is dome real fast Antigua’s carnival as we know it will slip further and further down the totem pole. Just like the government have consultations all across the country for other issues they need to take the lead and do something about this and get ideas from the public on how to stop the slide downwards. can we still say with a straight that its the greatest summer festival as we use to boast?

The opening parade has been getting worse and worse each year, it is becoming a real farce and they should just scrap it and go straight to the grounds and declare carnival open if they can’t put on a better display, I watch ABS on the net and this so called parade looked so pitiful.

#9 Me » 2010-07-26 02:09

I was also quite amused that whootoop was allowed to play while the schools were on stage. I kept scratching my head wondering what was taking place. My next question is, "What happens to the old Queen of Carnival costumes?" Wouldnt it make sense to have the costumes from the previous year on display for the opening cermony? Also another option is to have the carnival troupes that play t-shirt mas display their costumes on the road for the oepning parade. If I count correctly that would be about 4 or 5 of them. A parade should be about color n excitement. I know we in a recession, but the littest of things would make the biggest difference. Just my opinion.

I guess people have other things to do with their time. Or they're just not "feeling" the cannaval vibes dis year. Ask the CDC marketing/promo tion team. Yikes! Maurice Merchant quit . . . . where is Namba, Vaugh, and the sub-committee members??????

Not a good signal

#3 Dig It » 2010-07-26 00:45

This is not a good signal for our carnival. If the opening of carnival is disapointing, I can image what the rest of the festivities would look like? There is no doubt that Namba and Walter should have put in more time and effort to make our opening of carnival a success. I believe they should be held accountable for this low turn out. However, we as patrons have to do our part to make carnival a success, inorder to keep the spirit alive.

If that picture on the bottom left was really taken during the opening of carnival, then things are off to a "rainy" start this year. Hopefully things will improve before Last Lap;D

What happened to all the time Dr.Paul spent composing, practising, and performing songs for Calypso competition? Time = money. Perhaps that time could have been better spent planning, controlling, motivating, and executing carnival activities.>:(

What will YOU do about this Eleston?
