New Queen of Carnival Crowned

WinnersAntigua St John's - Six contestants – Alicia Roberts, Larissa James, Jennaecia Lewis, Satriece George, Latisha Greene, and Talisa Gomes – took to the stage shortly after 8 on Monday night at the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

But only one, Latisha Greene, was adjudged the 2011 Queen of Carnival when the show wrapped up just after 1 am.

This year, a number of the segments were juxtaposed, and the results of three pre-judged sections were disclosed immediately after the hopefuls introduced themselves to the audience.

Alicia Roberts shone through in two out of these three segments, capturing the Kai Davis Miss Congeniality Award, and Most Improved. Talisa Gomes was voted Most Photogenic.

Brucella Marsh was the night’s host, and a new addition to the line-up was a live backstage feed of the contestants and their preparations. This was hosted by Eldean Eudelle, and featured excerpts from the weeks leading up to the night of the pageant, when the delegates took part in the ABS TV show, Crowned.

The first judged segment was the interview. Each delegate was asked two questions - one from her biography and another based on current events. The crowd favourite swimwear segment saw the delegates displaying their toned bodies and modeling skills in either one or two-piece suits. Even as rain drenched the stage during this segment, this seemingly did little to dim the smiles of the young women.Latisha-Greene

Next was the talent segment. While there was a significant delay due to rain, the young women attempted to make up for this lapse by giving energetic performances. Garbed in a white outfit resplendent of an angel, Alicia ,Roberts sang her way into the hearts of the crowd with her rendition of “I Promise You”. Dance was the talent of choice for delegate Larissa James.

Her interpretive dance to Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me” was inspired by a quest to bring to light violence against women, in an effort to stem the prevalence of this abuse. Jennaecia Lewis was all shimmery in a black dress, adorned at the right shoulder with the colors of the Antigua and Barbuda flag, as she sang “I Don’t Care How You get Here”, dedicated she said to those overseas who were not able to come home for Carnival.

“At Last” was the song chosen by Satriece George, and in keeping with the vintage nature of the song, she wore a long red dress with a red rose adorning her coif. Latisha Greene kept pace during the talent segment as she too chose interpretive dance, initially to a chorus of children singing and culminating in African dance to the beat of drums.

Rounding off the segment was Talisa Gomes, who changed the pace with her pan selection, paying tribute to King Swallow as he celebrates 50 years in the calypso arena. While she started off on a somber note, Gomes broke into a medley of Swallow tunes to finish her act.

In the Costume Segment, Alicia’s costume, Sapphire Flame, was designed and built by Calvin Southwell. Larissa displayed her Lady of the Lake costume, designed and built by Shanny Lewis of Solid International. Jennaecia’s costume was designed and built by Jerry Daniel. Calvin Southwell also designed and built Satriece’s costumed, named Chica Chica. Latisha boasted a Nadine Gomes design which was built by Escape, and Talisa ended the segment with Black Swan, also designed and built by Shanny Lewis of Solid International.

“Golden Rose,” designed and made by Calvin Southwell, was worn by Alicia as she modeled in the final judged segment of the night, the evening wear. Larissa took to the stage in another Calvin Southwell creation. Jenecia’s “Gothic Rose” creation was designed and made by Sharon Barton, while Setrice also boasted a Sharon Barton design titled, “Inspiration”. Latisha’s “Metamorphosis” was designed and made by Adelia of Deshaun, and in her ensemble “Josephine,” also designed and made by Adelia of Deshaun, Talisa closed off the segment.

2010 Queen of Carnival Dori Benjamin walked the stage for the last time, and paved the way for the 54th Queen of Carnival, Latisha Greene, 2nd Runner Up, Jenicia Lewis and 1st Runner Up, Satriece George. The winners in the other judged sections are as follows:

Best Interview: Jenecia Lewis
Best Swimwear: Latisha Greene
Best Costume: Satriece George
Winner Shermaine Jeremy Performing Talent Segment: Larissa James
Best Evening Wear: Latisha Greene
People’s Choice Award:
Winner, Best Costume Designer Calvin Southwell (Satriece George, Chica Chica)
Winner, Best Evening Wear Designer, Adelia of Deshaun (Latisha Greene, Metamorphosis)

it's funny how you can hide behind the comfort of your PC and judge the people who are courageous enough to do what most of you can’t. it’s not easy to get up on stage to perform for such harsh critics as yourselves. it’s quite difficult when you have to answer a question on a stage in front of hundreds of critical, small minded people who think that the solution is to laugh and boo the obviously nervous contestant. some people are naturals at things like this which is why they come off as "smart" and are able to answer their question. nevertheless the ones who don't answer their question may not be dumb but you try doing what they do with a million and one things on your mind and still answer your question (if you can even hear it at that point). I know that we are all entitled to our own opinion but the next time you decide to get so harsh remember it’s not easy to get up on stage to be judged not only by a panel of judges but also to be judged by you.

The long weaved hair and toned Bodies was not enough to mar the embar**ment caused during the most important segment ie, Question/Answer . What a shame, for yrs we are experiecing young women just fresh out of school, cannot answer a question.if you cant answer a question how are you going to represent your country in the outside world. This is shameful and inexcusable,if you are not ready for the stage in all aspects, then by all means please do not go and emba** Antigua. The commitee needs to do more in selecting,it is not just some fake hair and nails that make you able to represent.

The show was the worst and most boring I ever saw. They need to have more training to take part in such show. Q&A was a colossal failure, talent all flop except for the one dance with larissa ,evening wear was truly for latisha. To me no one won, they were all miserable, excep t for the dance by larissa and of course Brucella. Brucella steal the show

All I could do was Smile. All I can do now is to continue to smile. I came on this site last year and saw how people bashed the chairperson of last year's Queen of Carnival. This year, everyone, is holding thier heads at what was promised to be a show out of this world. I am still waiting. Last year's show made this year's fiasco look like a farce. Bring back na keltie

Total Disgrace!

#9 Madness » 2011-07-27 22:43

Queen shows years and years ago had higher standards than today. The girls had to have class and can speak. Today anything goes just to make money. The show was just a disaster. Being a queen from my experience is not just showing your private on stage. A queen must know how to represent. If you could not answer a simple question about your bio then we are in big trouble. Over the years, the gowns have gotten too revealing. The queen was naked. WE NEED TO REARRANGE THE CARNIVAL COMMITTEE OR ELSE WE A DOOM FOR DISASTER.

@ Smooth> i really do not know what you want me to say, but did you watch the show? The question and answer was extremely poor. As an educator I was most disappointed, especially given the fact that at least one question for each girl was linked to her bio. Were they lying about their bios or they are just not up where we expected them to be. For crying out loud, the teacher amongst them could have lifted the standard, but alas, she was not better.
Did you see the girl dancing and every minute pulling up her costume so that her breasts were not exposed? In fact a friend is suggesting that an aureola was shown.
I could go on and on. As to the winner, she reminds of the usual things said about blonds! Go figure!

Epic Fail

#7 spectator » 2011-07-27 13:47

The Q&A was painful on the ears, to say the least. How can a grown, educated woman not know what 'Lifestyle diseases' are??? seriously?? The Carnival Committee should start recruting the girls atleast 8 months before the actual start of Carnival. Even the Teensplash contestants had more talent and are better public speakers than the queen contestants.

what is the matter with you people?

#6 I was there » 2011-07-27 11:00

I attended the show and other than the late start, thanks to the governor general who was late, and a bit of rain, I thought the show was great. I think all the girls were wonderful. They performed very well. The q&a section was a little disappointing, but I think the ladies are very nervous during this section. We need to stop being so hard when judging our own.

New Queen

#5 Titan » 2011-07-27 10:54

First, the show was a bit boring and you know when Antiguan attend a show they expected to get their monies worth, honestly the performing talents were very poor and overall the girls did n`t really bring it with no emphasis like to say wow, Brucella played a good role to make the show a bit more entertaining so at the end of the day you would have people like me that would go to queen show every year to show support for carnival but they really have to come alot better and the waiting during an intermission ridiculous!!!

What was so poor about it Roadwarrior? The new Chairperson of the Queen's Committe promised a show like no other. You mean this did not transpire? Please elaborate
