Calypso Association Bans Delinquents

Calypso Association Bans DelinquentsAntigua St John's - The Calypsonians' Association has followed through with its threat to deal severely with those who defied its dictate to boycott the registration fee implemented by the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) during a recent impasse.

President Adelza "Lipstick" Sheridan confirmed that the executive met on Tuesday night, and after lengthy discussions, the executive decided to relieve two members – George "Faithful" Henry and Bernard "Bernie" DeNully – of their seats on the executive.

Additionally, for the next three years they have been stripped of all privileges accrued to members.

Non-executive members have also been placed on a three-year ban.

“We have to show these delinquent calypsonians that we are very serious about discipline in this association,” Sheridan said.

The affected calypsonians will not be able to take part in cultural exchanges organised by the association, along with workshops and overseas trips.

Sheridan also confirmed that representatives of both the Mas Association and the Steel Band association were invited to the meeting in an attempt to form an alliance to negotiate as one body with the CDC in the future.

No firm decision was reached on this issue.

During the impasse with the CDC, the Calypso Association had asked its members not to register, as there was an issue with the new registration fee introduced by the CDC. But some calypsonians ignored the directive.

suggestion to Lipstick

#13 carvaa » 2011-05-27 05:57

I listen to Lipstick and Ms Y B the other day on Good Morning A&B and they seem very confident that calypso sunday night will once again rise to the top. Let me make two suggestions the calypsonian with the sweetest voice former KING, KING FIAH for the past few years was left out of the finals also Scorpian These are two calypsonians with alot of fans and both come good every year get the judges to [ JUDGE ].Two stop Hating Young Destroyer. Last year the Bear sing a song about a man asking him to come home, who cares? and he won! i bet my money he would not be crown in Anguilla. I called Observer radio one morning and mentioned King FIAH has the sweetest calypso voice, i think Pan Man was the guest at the time and he disagree he said EDDIE MELLO, but i didn't say best singer i said sweetest voice. Try staying up at 5:am and watch the calypso on ABS TV and i wish they could just get a DVD with a FIAH and Scorpian combination.I also wonder if they have any of the old ones with Mighty Swallow with songs like Children and Dawn batting the Monarch and Obstinate and Tumba?

When the calypsonians join the association, do they give up their individual rights? This is absurd in my view. Anyway, exactly what will these members be missing from not being in the association, not one thing I am sure.

This sounds like the calypsonians disobeyed a parent's instruction.

What does it mean to be a member of the association? How similar or different is this to a union and its members? If a union called for industrial action and a unionised staff decides not to join them, what would the union do?

Following through with a decision

#7 Wadadlineko » 2011-05-25 09:41

The calypso association has all right to make that move. This will send a strong warning to its members. If an association has a meeting to decide there next move forward and everyone agrees to it and then after agreeing some members go behind there back and go against the grain of things then they should be punished. Now imagine if more than 15 members went and registered e.g. 45, do you think the CDC would have reversed their decision? There selfish decision could have jeopardized the whole thing. So I think for the next three years they have plenty of time to learn from there mistakes :D

This is so ridiculous! First they yammer on about no respect because they weren't consulted about a perfectly reasonable registration fee, then they impose these utterly over the top sanctions on those members who dared to pay it? This sense of entitlement is going to be the downfall of this nation.

I commend the association for making their disciplinary decision, hoever, I think three years is a bit harsh.

I find it strange that the association was accusing the CDC of being too harsh and unfair in its tactics, but turns around and is dealing even more harshly and unfairly with its own members. Things that makes you go hmmmm.

I totally agree with the Calypso Association. If they allow the spineless jellyfishes to go scot free then they may not be able to put forward any credible case to the CDC in the future. Well don

What an abuse of power!! This such an unjust act and I hope the calypsonians have grounds to sue the association. These are dictatorial tendencies - Kinda reminds me of the present Government.

I am trying to figure that the next thing to happen to these calysonians who broke the ranks would for them to be beheaded.
Are we for real that you ban these persons for three long years because of this? Come on, we need more compassion here. I am ashamed of the association!
