Prospective Queens Vie for Spot In Finals

Prospective Queens Vie for Spot In FinalsAntigua St John's - The screening of Queen of Carnival hopefuls took a different format this year, with the young women up for public viewing during the session to decide the finalists.

Nine candidates - Larissa James, Careen Glascow, Jennaecia Lewis, Yogaine Ria Fiedtkou, Telesa Gomes, Latisha Green, Donnatella Matthias, Alicia Roberts, and Satrise George, appeared before a panel of judges and a small audience at the Multi-Purpose Centre on Wednesday. They were seen in the introduction segment, swimwear, talent, and interview.

Six finalists will be selected to compete at Carnival City during the 2011 celebrations. One of the candidates

Just before the entertainment from the prospective queen contestants, Carnival Chairman Vaughn Walter showered praise on the 2011 committee for bringing a fresh aspect to the build-up to the show.

Minister of Culture Eleston Adams meanwhile told the young women that although each of them wants to win, she should also use the experience to enhance herself, while having fun. He said the journey should also help them to become better citizens within their respective communities.

Adams said he had received suggestions to stage the queen show at a different time, but in dismissing this notion, said would not deny the contestants the opportunity to showcase their worth on the biggest stage available at this time of year.

One of the candidatesBrief remarks were also delivered by Chairperson of the Queen of Carnival Committee Vandah Neal-Gardner, who lauded the level of support being exhibited by the minister and the CDC.

She said the changes being made in hosting this year’s show were designed to enhance the event, and to prepare the contestants for regional and global competitions.

Neal-Gardner said apart from the committee members, the past queens have also agreed to be chaperones for the contestants.

Meanwhile, Adams, appearing on national television, announced a 100 percent increase in the ticket price for the Soca Monarch finals. Fans will now have to pay $50 to attend. In addition, the minister announced a reduction in the number of complimentary tickets that would be issued.

Adams said in the past, organisers had been selling the show short, and that practice would be rectified in 2011.

Finalists will also select their order of appearance on stage via a different method. The reigning monarch will be allowed to select his position, while the other contestants will select their preference in the order of appearance in the semi-finals.

This means that the last semi-final contestant will simply be left with the remaining slot.

Carnival 2011 runs from July 23 to August 2.

in agreement

It seems to me that the Minister does not underhand his role and is inserting his handprint on everything pertaining to carnival. I do agree however that price charged for the show seems too low. I do not know what analysis was done before the final decision was made. I hope that this decision was not arbitrary.

Increase not a bad idea

#17 MaeStro » 2011-05-01 13:21

I believe the increase is not a bad idea and I also believe they missed incremental increases in the past. The average show of any kind being held in Antigua is approximately 50.00. Then why is it so far fetched to ask for 50 for most the TOP SOCA acts on the island in one night? What I can agree with is why it took the fellow from Trinidad to open his eyes. For all the talks of economics and hardships (while true) the fetes and mass troops will be able to extract in the range of 150.00-1000.00 for participation, agreed the packaging might be different but I believe the increase is justified.

What a Bam Bam

#14 George LB Bird » 2011-04-29 19:24

If he is gonna charge $50 to get in to the Soca Monarch Finals he better make sure it is now a International Soca Monarch. He is gonna kill the support from our Jamaicans, Guyanese etc... that used to help FILL up the ARG for that show. Does he believe they love it enough to pay $50? He should do a VIP and $20 section if anything. It just shows how "OBLIVIOUS" the whole UPP is at how people are "SUFFERING" right now! And now the one chance of the year they get to release the "STRESS" they want to price the poor out of it!!! He gonna HAVE to make sure Tizzy, Claudette, Tian, Cro Kuss, Onyan & Oungku all enter in order to pull that off!!! TnT got their Soca King (Machel) to enter this year maybe we can get ours (Oungku). But $50 across the board is definately a crazy move and I think Namba is getting **ed now!!!

Skyewill I suspect the idea here is to use the show that most people attend as a way to make up for the costs for the shows which lack support. I suspect this will only cause the show to have lower attendance. Essentially we need to revamp everything. The show I would go to each year is the monarch and it won't see me this year. At the heart of it, its the artists (calypsonians) fault because like most these days (eg West Indies Cricketers) they have shown themselves to be more concerned about getting money than providing value.

Afeasibility study? Be serious. Are you going to pay for it? Most project do not need any feasibility study. If the situation need to be changed it will be obvious. When things need to be done you simply do them. I couldn't careless. i find the shows boring and not very entertaining

I am so sorry, i was distracted by the beauty that i forgot to read this article. I humbly apologize. However, i am reading from your blogs that in this article they said they are increasing the shows 100%, wow, i do not think that is a good idea at this time.

Yes, we should budget, and go to the shows we can afford but it is also moral and governmental (if I may) to look at the total circumstances before they decide to increase prices, in addition such high increase.

I am sorry this blog of mine was late on the core issue, the pictures was willfully placed their to distract me ha ha ha ha ha

I could not agree more with you,it seem like the minister has nothing better to do,he should be removed from the Ministry and given a job as Chairman of Carnival, never in all my yrs have i seen a Govt Minister so directly involved in the Carnival planning, they are just jokers.

Mr. Minister - find some hard work to do.

#8 browngal » 2011-04-29 11:52

Dax Rebel, I could not have said it better myself. The politicians need to stay out of Carnival, that is why you have a Board. It is quite obvious that the good Minister has nothing to do, because every every week he is being quoted on things that should be dealt with by the CDC and PR. I have been involved in Carnival for over 40 years and one of the first things you learn is that if you price a show at say $10.00 you might get 2,000 persons hence collecting $20,000.00 but if you price it at $20.00 you might just get 500 persons and collect $10,000.00. Is the gentleman in Trinidad running our business. Please Mr. Minister let the persons you appointed on the CDC do their work and stop interfering.

Agree with Dax

#7 Educated National » 2011-04-29 10:56

Dax I totally agree with you. Of recent Adams seems to be moving his mouth but his brain is not in gear. His announcement that because a Trinidad promoter said that they were "giving away the show" as a justification for DOUBLING the price makes no sense at all, ESPECIALLY with harder economic times.

People, we must learn to live within our means. If our finances would not allow us to attend ALL the shows and other functions, then we must choose the ones we can afford. In addition, let us stop teaching our children to hang their hats higher than they can reach. They can stay at home or be engaged in activities that their parents can afford. Self-discipline and prudent financial management should start from an early age, then we would not have so many young thieves and bandits at 1735!

Time to purge the CRAB

#5 Dax Rebel » 2011-04-29 10:35

Minister Adams made it known that a Trinidadian promoter believes that we are selling our shows short, meaning that the prices are too low. Without conducting a feasibility study, he decides to double the entrance fees for the Party Monarch Competition. It is imperative that this crab be replaced with someone with a brain, if carnival is to make any progress. Twenty-four hours ago, Minister Cort indicated that a minimum wage review is due, but an increase is impossible at this time because of the dire economic circumstances. So one Minister (Cort) is concerned about raising the wages of those at the bottom of the ladder, while another Minister (Adams) is of the opinion that these same workers out to pay twice as much to attend activities during the carnival celebrations.

Completely oblivious to this whole scenario, are the Minister of Tourism & Culture John Maginley, and Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer. Sooner, rather than later, someone will have to barrel and purge the CRAB.

For poor people

#3 Emancipation » 2011-04-29 09:03

Why do they always have to make it hard for poor people. Seriously? 100% increase? ... they cannot afford to increase minimum wage and pay workers on time so how they expect these same people to really enjoy the "entire" carnival without much money to spend?. There are so many pre-fetes, then there are the shows, Lions, and all other in-betweens.. people want to participate in J'ouvert, Play mass and still attend the shows.. and most of these people have children they cannot afford to send overseas so they have to stay here and their parents have to find money for them too to enjoy the emancipation celebrations... oh forgot to mention, parent still have to find money to place children in different summer camps and or other activities before the whole carnival celebrations (because schools close early) and after all of that still find money to school fee and school supplies....... ..... (PHEW!!!!).. What the F***? Poor people not supposed to enjoy carnival too? Are they supposed to just stand up on the side of the road and look on or listen to all the commentaries/ results of the shows because they cannot afford them... or they are just not being made affordable????? ?????/

#2 tenman » 2011-04-29 08:29

PLM I would have thought you would have been first to comment on this article? Anyway the price increase, 100%, seems drastic but hopefully Namba did proper research. I suspect one of the contestants name was misspelled. It should be Talisa Gomes not Telesa Gomes. I wish all the contestants best wishes and expect to see Miss Gomes, who possesses both brain (7 O level p**, has an associates degree and soon will get a bachelors degree) and beauty (seems to run in the family), to win the local queen and Jaycees.
