Application forms are available at the National Festivals Office- NFO, 1st floor, Pigotts’ Mall on Market and Redcliffe Streets, Mondays to Thursdays 8 am to 4:30 pm and on Fridays 8 am to 3 pm.
The NFO also sent out a special appeal to all cultural artistes to submit their recorded music to its office. The NFO is embarking on a new initiative of building a music library.
The musical works will help us in the speedy creation of this compilation which will be used as resource material at future workshops.
CD’s should be submitted to the National Festivals Office. For further information, contact the NFO at 462-4707/0194.
The public has also been informed that the NFO will be conducting a series of calypso adjudicators workshops. This series of workshops is extended to ALL persons desirous of becoming calypso competition adjudicators.
The inaugural session will begin on Saturday February 19, and will be held every Saturday until March 26. These sessions will be conducted at the conference room in the Ministry of Tourism Headquarters from 10 am to 1 pm.
These workshops will cover a wide range of topics giving a deeper concentration to and on Calypso versus the normal crash courses that have been done in the past.
The topics to be covered are:
• History of Calypso;
• History of Calypso in Antigua and Barbuda;
• Adjudicating a Calypso Competition;
• Adjudicators Roles & Guidelines;
• Adjudicators Code of Ethics;
At the end of the theoretical sessions, four practical assignments will be conducted. Participants who would have achieved 100 percent attendance at these sessions will receive a certificate of attendance.
Richard Apparicio, facilitator for these workshops, said, “I am extremely excited about this project. As you know it’s no secret of my love affair with this cultural art-form. I have been observing that over the years, we have been doing a disservice to not just only this art-form but also to the Contestants who compete in our competitions.
"This is the rationale why I have decided to take off my hat as the business manager/financial controller of the NFO and dedicate my time for six weeks to facilitate these sessions. Six weeks will give me adequate time to cover the subject areas."
Apparicio further appealed to educators who specialize in English Literature (English B), history, music, and anyone with a passion for this cultural art form to attend these sessions, to which their profession could actually cross into something which could be developed into a worthwhile hobby.
Anyone interested in participating in the calypso adjudicators workshops are asked to register at the National Festivals Office.
