Automatic Bye Scrapped

Automatic Bye ScrappedAntigua St. John's - Sub-par performances by those who receive the automatic bye into Trinidad and Tobago's International Soca competition has resulted in the arrangement being scrapped for Antigua & Barbuda's party monarch winner Tian Winter and other regional competitors.

That disclosure comes from Minister responsible for Carnival Eleston Adams, who said Caribbean Prestige Foundation, organiser of the show, bowed to pressure following years of objections from Trinidadian artistes.

"Some people are saying they're not as dynamic and as good as artistes in Trinidad and some felt they were lowering the standard of the show by giving them the automatic bye," Minister Adams said.

"There have been complaints that when artistes go to Trinidad they don't have much in the way of presentation to enhance the show and their performance is low."

He said the situation was not made easier by the failure of regional governments to give sufficient support to their artistes, the failure of overseas competitors to properly market their countries, and the inadequate use of the opportunity to promote carnivals in the different countries.

Antigua & Barbuda spent EC $27,000 as part of a deal with Caribbean Prestige to advertise its carnival during the February 2011 show. The organiser promoted the festivity on its website, on radio stations there and on the night of the show.

Winter, who is among those who benefitted from the arrangement, said he has no problems going through the paces.

"I'm still going down to Trinidad and try out in the preliminaries and enjoy myself. At the end of the day Trinidad is done playing the music already," he said.

Ricardo Drue - the second and third place winner in the Jumpy and Groovy categories respectively - said he too has no issues being part of a local contingent heading into next year's Port of Spain competition.

"We have a good chance to go down," said Drue, who has ties to Trinidad and performs with that country's Roy Cape All Stars band.

"Tian and I will go down and anybody who wants to go down can, so let's go down as a force," he said.

Antigua & Barbuda has been getting the automatic bye in the Trinidad and Tobago competition for the past four years.

The chickens have come home to roost, Antigua had that opportunity in 2010 to move ahead. Ask the artists, Tourism and Culture what they did.

It is evident that we can have a show for the caribbean of the same size as tnt. We can host a show like the trini them or even better and it may even expose other smaller islands soca persons. It would be better for us as a tourism product as well. And leave people with dem subben.

We deserve exactly what we get from T&T because even fools as the saying goes learn from experience. Antiguans have very bad memories and have already forgotten how difficult it was to get our players on the W.I side due to roadblocks set up by T&T,GT, BIM and JA. And even when our players got picked they were held to much higher standards than the larger island players (think Ridley Jacobs vs Courtney Brown/) Lara with the help of the WI board never stopped undermining Richie till he got the captaincy.
We allow T&T artists to come here during carnival and perform on our biggest stages while our artists are relegated to a rum shop to perform in T&T. I agree with Annoyed, we should stop playing their music during our festival and promote and support our own. The T&T artists are coming here and copying Flames and Danske music shamelessly and we still have Antiguan artists going to T&T to copy the recycled crap.

Stand your own

We have our ow soca artistes, we should let them support themselves, promote themselves and and enter any rgional completion on their own. Keep the officials of the government out of their actions. Then again, a lot of us in Antigua treat the government's treasury like their piggy bank. Stop it.
One of the reason Trinidad and Jamaican artists can do well is because they are Independent, they work on their own and only spend what they have and at their own risk. We need to divorce the beliefs of government hand in all we do. Government can't even pay salaries. Stop it!

Antigua had the opportunity to move ahead of the rest of the Caribbean in music, the artists became stupid, the government was not any better. They deserve what TNT is doing to them.

This now leaves TNT in the position where they can go around the world and say they are better than the rest of the Caribbean, so pay attention to us only. What they have been doing for years and have had no backlash from the rest of the islands.

Thing is Soca/jam band music originated with the band I called the Fab four. If TnT doesn’t want others in their soca show which is funded by their Gov. Then so be it, it is there show they have all rights. What we should be doing here is stepping up or game in this industry. Becoming more original with our songs and productions, try to do it better. The set up a show much bigger and better. But where will the money come from. The fab four started Soca music in my opinion then TnT singers ran with it and made it their own. we need to seriously develop our own singers, take back what was started right here in ANU. But the minds of Antiguans does not allow for us to ascend to greatness which is sad. Perhaps we should start with who started and boosted this type of music. We need to forget about TnT refine our performers and set a standard right here in ANU. Fab4 you listening!

Leave them

#3 Gadg » 2012-08-08 22:07

I think that TNT should be left with their show. In the first place they don't care to have no outsiders in it.
They treat the outside artist like ** don't go there and try to beg to be in

Wake up soca artists!!!

#2 Avid Reader » 2012-08-08 19:54

What everyone seems to be forgetting, the TNT government funds this event, it is the only soca monarch competition that occurs in TNT. Why should the government allow anyone to come into their country and walk out with their money?.

This is not an international competition, it is outrageous to watch the other islands spending money to compete in this event. Spend the money on promotion and marketing, leave the Trini's to themselves, they love to say that ya'll not good as they are. Total rubbish.

Go Ahead

When Danski, Young Destroyer & Ricardo Dru came on they were introduced by the emcees then the engineer played the long video interview before the band started. So by the time they came on the crowd was subdued.

Before C.P came on they played her video interview first then the emcees came out and introduced C.P like it was Michael Jackson coming out.

When Tian came out their was no video interview. Nobody knows who wrote or produced his songs up to now. But ofcourse he was also introduced with some hype from the 2 judges.

When Tian was on stage he got a better light show and the band was actually jumping up with him. I am not even talking about the fact that his crew gave out glow sticks. The lightman was much more focused when he was on.

My point is that when Tian and crew goes to T&T I hope they are ready for the same treatment they gave out because it will be the same bias he will have to face from Machel and his managers closeness with promoters, dj's, and others and their "hands and dollars all over the T&T Carnival" ... Good Luck!!!
