WAR Unperturbed By Road March Win

Onyan and the Burning Flames - Wifey and MateyAntigua St. John's - The announcement that the Burning Flames’ song, Kick In She Backdoor, was adjudged winner of the 2012 Road March has been greeted with a muted response from the head of Women Against Rape (WAR), Alexandrina Wong.

WAR called for a ban of the song because, according to Wong, its lyrics promoted violence against women. The call seemed to have had the opposite effect, as there are many who feel that the call for a ban only helped to make the song more popular, and that it may have contributed to its Road March victory.

When told that the song was announced as winner during the on-stage presentation at Carnival City on Tuesday night, Wong said it was never about the Burning Flames, its leader Onyan, or any individual artiste for the matter. She said her organisation’s aim was to highlight the need for artistes to be conscious of the likely impact of the lyrics they sing.

Wong told Caribarena.com that the entire affair has served as a catalyst that has brought together a number of people and organisations who plan to step up the campaign to have more socially responsible lyrics in the songs that are aired on the radio.

“We are planning a meeting very soon and we are going to seek the establishment of a set of media codes or some sort of mechanism to screen songs for content before they are broadcast on the air,” she stated.

She said the code will be in place for all songs throughout the year, but in particular at Carnival time when much more locally produced material is aired.

“We want to be able to look at these songs and be able to determine how they relate to women, girls and violence against women generally,” Wong declared.

Several individuals have already indicated a willingness to work along with WAR on the issue. These include artiste Zarah Airall and social activists Elijah James and Frankie Southwell.

You don't have to do what the words say literally. Be Strong! Most of time I don't know what the words are, I just enjoy the Rhythum. :-)

Violence?

#16 EMPERAH » 2012-08-10 09:47

Let's speak about violence for a while Miss Wong. What are the acronyms of your organization again? Women Against Rape? WAR? Isn't that the highest form of violence? Or is it because you're ALL ABOUT women and its mostly men that are entrenched in war. Talk about estrogen.

I am at a loss as to why there is this much debate about songs that this band puts out. This is the band that sings, push dem dung kick dem dung, no kay wa u do dem, and the publiclly state that they don't understand why there are so many fights when they perform. Do I dear say that these people suffer from intellectual disability? Lets give the song the benefit of the doubt and say that its not about anal rape, the lyrics basically state, that if you go to a woman's house and she refuses to let you in, and she even went so far as to have the locks on her doors changed, you should disreguard her wished and break down her door and get in. And these artists did think some constraint should be shown in not releasing such a song? This is the best they can do with their God given talent?

P.S. to Rastaman, and anyone else who may not be aware, buggery is not just about anal sex, it also includes oral sex.

ANTIGUAN WOMAN

#14 tenman » 2012-08-08 23:47

ANTIGUAN WOMAN, the answer is yes. Its called Wild Wild West and our children will pay for it all (look at them whining up to the same song bringing back reminders of those kids following the pied piper as he leads them to their death). When you have those in authority not willing to follow written rules, why would you think persons would follow unwritten ones.

boom! boom!

#13 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-08-08 23:40

Calypso Joe, scratch it and, spin it one more time...ah think I hear a boom boom, let we go, let we boom boom, all around is boom boom, and fire in she boom boom, in the old and wrinkle boom boom...the actual words used by Joe would not be understood by the World at large, but to those of us, who remembered this road march, played with the lyrics so much, that we would get a beating if heard singing this song. Those were the days when most Calypsonians including the great Sparrow, Jean & Dina...used lyrics/words which even then were deemed offensive. However, times have changed, the psyche of Society is so enshrined and blurred by perception that what an artist/calypson ian says is not only taken literally, it's more often than not depicted in video AND this is the big difference between yesterdays suggestive lyrics andtodays. A child of today is more likely to re-enact a video and not cognizant of the damages been caused and remember, in our culture today, children think they're adults by puberty. So Onyan and Crew, the youths of today are not only listening, they're watching intently too, and they will imitate your your every move.

Antigua Gone!!!

#10 It Is Me » 2012-08-08 19:16

The riddim is alright at best. For roadmarch I was expecting something with a little more energy.

The lyrics are ridiculous to put it nicely. I am surprised it got so much play on the road ... it shows how wacked the dj's and jam bands are imn Antigua.

First Kentucky ... now kick in she back door. When our grandchildren look back at roadmarch history of Antigua they are gonna wonder what was going on in 2011 - 2012.

It seems in them times Grandpa if you wanted a girl ya'll just took her to Kentucky and if she won't let you in later ya'll just "kick in she back door"!!!

LOL...LOL

Is Ms Wong from China? We need more songs like this to brighten up carnival. The songs coming out of Antigua nowadays do not have enough hit potential to make an impact internatioally.

If we are debating this then we can all agree on one thing we are no longer a christian society. If you do not find the lyrics to be perverse or morally offensive see sentence one. Fornication is still a sin. Buggering is still unlawful. If someone one insight's illegality shouldn't the police have an intrest? The lyrics is saying if you cannot get into the house kick down the back door even if she balling murder murder. We need to check ourselves because if its good for you its good for the gays nuff said. The Rastaman say so

ANTIGUAN WOMAN

#5 tenman » 2012-08-08 13:13

ANTIGUAN WOMAN, you are quite right, the group was indeed formed when rapes had started to spiral out of control and there was talk of a serial rapist. This group and others pushed the idea that rape victims should be treated better and there be one way glass to protect victims when they tried to pick the perpetrator out of a lineup (I hear this is now in place). AntiguaWoman I disagree with you that the majority of women do not find the lyrics offensive, but for some its all about the beat.

If i am not mistaken it was during the period when we had an appalling amount of rapes that this group was formed with miss Wong been the head, so it is not fair to say she said nothing. However it seem the vast majority of our women find no offense in the song,so if i were Miss Wong and all else i would leave it right there.

#2 Fire For Babywrong » 2012-08-08 08:42

Where were /are Alexandrina Wong and "WAR" when the almost daily reports of rape of women were being reported by the news media. Women sleeping in their beds, with their children, secured in their homes had to endure violence, rape , fear and terrorism yet I have never heard a word from her.

Why didn't she take the police force and government to task on ensuring the security of women? Political and personal gimmick that is all it is. Tell Wong (wrong) get wha life!

Seems to me that War is targeting Carnival and locally produced songs. They need to quit their has been violence and curse words in songs for decades from Bob Marley shooting the sherrif to Sparrow, to Rhianna and the list goes on and on. Give this a rest, no one is taking this song literally and your out cry has done nothing but benefit the artist.
