Dominica Takes 51st Jaycees Crown

L-R St Lucia’s Roxanne Didier-Nicholas, Miss Dominica Nadira Lando and Miss St Kitts & Nevis Kalia HugginsAntigua St. John's - Dominica’s Nadira Lando is the 2012/2013 Jaycees Queen, having emerged ahead of 14 other delegates including Antigua and Barbuda at an inclement weather imposed Antigua Recreation Ground – Carnival City.

Miss St Kitts & Nevis Kalia Huggins fetched first runner-up, while St Lucia’s Roxanne Didier-Nicholas was adjudged second runner-up.

This is the 7th time in the 51-year history of the Jaycee’s competition that Dominica has won the title. The win came through a new judging system that most of the audience seemed to distaste since it did not bring forward the total points for each contestant to determine an overall winner.

Lando also copped the titles for Miss Photogenic as chosen by the photographers on site and Best Evening Wear and Modeling Style.

But the journey wasn’t easy for the Dominican Queen as she fought her way through fifteen beauties from across the Caribbean, having the first faceoff last Wednesday at the Jaycee’s Pre-Show where the girls were examined and judged in a presentation that would see five of them shaved off the list at the start of Friday night’s event.

Those who advanced included Antigua and Barbuda; St. Croix; St. Vincent; Anguilla; St. Kitts; the BVI; St. Lucia; Dominica; Jamaica; and Trinidad and Tobago.

The ten came together in three segments that included swimwear; talent and evening wear before being cut in half for the final and most feared segment – question and answer.

This segment saw Dominica; Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia; St. Kitts; and Antigua.

Miss St Lucia, who displayed amazing talent in the areas of dance and ballet, copped the best Talent Performance and best Swimwear segments.
Anguilla’s Olufunmike Devonish took the title of Miss Congeniality.

Congrats to Ms. Dominica. We will never agree on these shows but special congrats to Ms Anguilla whose talent performance by playing a saw was very interesting and unique. Good job in swimwear as well but I suppose the evening gown segment caused you to fall down compared to the other more extravagant gowns. We are proud of you.

Daughter of Klass Mr. Hyacinth wasn't the only judge at the show. I think the new criteria was design for Miss Dominica; with see being awarded Miss Photogenic. I would also like to inform you that Mr. Hyacinth was the chief judge at the Miss Carnival held in St. Vincent. St. Lucia won; both St. Kitts and Dominica did not place. I lived on Antigua for years; I recall the years when the show was judged by all Antiguan judges. I recall the years when the show was called; " Miss Antigua and her Runners up. I recall when there were order countries were clear cut winners; but Antigua won because; the costume criteria was to her advantage. What you see now is no costume; home girl has no edge.

Jaycees Queen Show

#1 Daughter of Klaas » 2012-08-04 21:33

Congratulations to all my beautiful Caribbean SISTERS for their display of talent, poise and intelligence during the 2012Jaycees Queen Show. special Kudos to St. Kitts/Nevis despite an atrocious beginning of the talent segment. Thank God for His intervention. One question which plagues me is 'Exactly what was Ms. Dominica's talent? Reciting? If that is a legitimate category, then Ms. Jamaica had a more relevant and talented act. Perhaps if, FOR ONCE, Mr. Steve Hyacinth, Chief Education Officer of Dominica be denied an invitation to judge (he's been an annual fixture for years upon years resulting in Dominica emerging winner/runner-u p oftimes surprisingly) perhaps the competition could breath some fresh air and honest and more accurate decisions be arrived at.
