Hell's Gate Still Panorama Champs

Hell's Gate Still Panorama ChampsAntigua St. John's - Shouts of jubilation rang out at Carnival City and dozens of players rushed onto the stage in the wee hours of this morning as LIME Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra was declared Panorama winner for yet another year.

Playing in fifth spot, the band wowed the crowd and judges with its rendition of Sir McLean "King Short Shirt" Emmanuel's J'ouvert Rhythm arranged by Khan Cordice.

Digicel Halcyon - declared earlier this year as the joint 2011 Panorama winner with Hell's Gate -  had to settle for the first runner-up spot with King Short Shirt's We are the Ones arranged by Victor "Babu" Samuel.

Second runner-up went to Caribseas Harmonites which performed the Aubrey "Lacu" Samuel arranged piece Kangaroo Jam - another song by King Short Shirt.

The winning arranger said he wants to "arrange and help to inspire young musicians to arrange for steel bands."

"I also want to help develop the steel pan art form in Antigua," Cordice said in an interview following the announcement of the results.

A new judging system was utilised for the Antigua Commercial Bank-sponsored competition to avoid repeating last year's controversy over the selection of the winner.  That matter remains unresolved, based on reports.

The winning bands were chosen by five judges; the highest and lowest scores were removed and the remaining figures were tabulated to determine the points standing.

Former president of the steel band association, Leon "Kuma" Rodney , who was part of the team that helped reorganise the judging system, said it worked.

"I think it was a good Panorama. At the end of the night pan was the winner," he said.

Big up all the band and all the people who have work hard to bring back the art to the kind of level its is now, we just need to see a band coming from between Allsaints and Falmouth area and one coming from between Jennings and Crabbs Hill Area.
CC Cochrane and his band will be some thing big in the next three years.
Big up to Pan.

Congratulations to Hells Gate Steel Orchestra! You guys make Antigua proud with your fantastic and exciting sound. It's great to see so many young people in the band and, if they stay with the band, it will be long time before any band can beat the Champs!

@ Gaston Browne & Collin Derrick

#4 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-08-03 15:47

First, let I congratulate The winner, Hellsgate and the runner up ,Harmonites. This community of Point & Villa have produced many of our Nations Stalwarts. Although, WE have been neglected for decades by political system, WE STILL RISE, so the results are no surprise.
What is surprising, is the fact that a section of our Nation which can be a catalyst for positive growth and change, a mecca with proper planning is been kicked around like a football by both Gaston Browne by extention ALP and Collin Derrick by extention UPP.
We need and demand the kind of leadership exemplified by the members ofHellsgate and Harmonites, NOT gang bangers from Fort Road North to Newgate Street South and speakeasy brothels from Fort Road East to Dredge Bay West. The both of you are responsible, SUNGOO NAH BETTA DAN LUNGOO....
for, we are the ones, to make you jam, to make you jump up and dance...
