Calypso Monarch Quarterfinals Scheduled for Weekend

Antigua St. John’s – This year’s Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch Quarterfinals will be held over the weekend at three different venues.

The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) has announced that the first round of eliminations for the 2012 Calypso Monarch Competition will begin promptly at 9:30 pm on Friday, July 13 at Golden Eye Calypso Revue, for artistes attached to that tent.

Next up is Swallow's Calypso Pepperpot, which will come alive with competition from 8:30 pm on Saturday, July 14.

And for artistes not attached to either of the two tents, the CDC will host the final leg at Palms Restaurant on Sunday, July 15.

The starting time is 7:30 pm. Calypsonians competing at the CDC tent are reminded that rehearsals are held daily at 6 pm, and that musical scores are required.

Admission to each night’s event is $20.

The exact number of artistes registered to compete in the Quarterfinals is uncertain, however, the 18 calypsonians who will get the judges' nod will then advance to the Semifinals, scheduled for Sunday, July 29.

Nine finalists will be selected from the penultimate round to challenge the reigning monarch, Keithroy "De Bear" Morson.

The Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch Finals will be held on Sunday, August 5, at Carnival City.

On the night of the competition, the finalists will be awarded points, based on their performance in main categories to include Lyrics, 40 points; Music, 35 points; and Performance and Presentation, 25 points.
