Antigua St John's - My mom will be 98 years old in May this year. Of the many dreams she has had in her lifetime, writing a book was not one of them. I would say that her sole goal was to do her best in helping her only son adopt and maintain the right values, get a good education, and achieve his dreams.
So when she decided about 18 months ago that she would share her thoughts with the world... she took on the project of writing a book with the zest and gusto of someone a third of her age.
So, it is with a lot of pride and emotion that I announce that my mother, Hyacinth Mottley, has published her first book, "Words of Wisdom - Words of Faith".
The book is based on her life experiences. It is filled with pearls of wisdom and nuggets of faith that we can all use as a guide in these difficult and challenging times.
She reveals her thoughts and perspectives on how we can live our lives successfully, and how we can do so on our own terms. She even gives us some of her personal prayers that she has used over a lifetime to guide and protect both of us. She shares a lot of advice based on her own experiences helping others.
For example, she warns that we should ensure that we are not living our lives based on other people’s beliefs rather than our own, and that we should be mindful of from whence our thoughts come. She also encourages us to live our lives to the fullest and make our Heaven here on Earth.
At 97, she says that although she is prepared for what’s next, she is looking forward only to what she has control over… this moment – right now. My mother was born in Barbados on May 13, 1914, but has lived most of her life in Antigua.
In her twenties, my mother left her job as a Barbadian school teacher and embarked on a remarkable journey that took her to several Caribbean islands – from Trinidad up to St Croix and everywhere in between.
From this journey, she gained many interesting life experiences. From her father, Daniel Mottley, a member of the Free Masons and a sailor who had travelled the world, she heard many exciting stories and learned powerful and often mystical practices and lessons of life… lessons that she would later use in her own life and to assist and empower others.
My mom is a fiercely independent person who believes strongly in the power of prayer and praise. Her comments on issues of personal development, politics, religion, and social life will uplift, inspire, and motivate you while bringing joy to your heart and smiles to your lips.
"Words of Wisdom – Words of Faith" will be available in Antigua this week and online at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com. It is also available on your Kindle app or device.
