Antigua St. John's- Passionate! Insightful! Stirring! Provocative! These are just some of the words that reviewers have used to describe the poems and articles in “Radical Thoughts – Empowering Perspective”.
Marcus Mottley has put together an Anthology of his thoughts spanning more than 25 years. He comments on social, educational, political and psychological issues relevant not only to his native country Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean Diaspora, but applicable to matters on a geopolitical scale.
Over twenty years ago in an article “The Profit Motive”, he warned of a financial system driven by greed and manipulated by business people who seek profit ‘by any means necessary’. In this article he warned of “cancerous corporations or their host nations spreading their tentacles and holding the rest of humankind to ransom.” Twenty-four years later (2008) his prediction came true.
In 2006, he warned of the “Modern Day Pirates and Privateers in the Caribbean” and tried to alert Antiguans and Barbudans to the dangers that a ‘certain piratical financier’ posed not only to his country but to the Caribbean Region. Recent events have again borne out his cautions.
In other articles like “Under the Big Tent”, “Ethical Conduct among Public Officials”, and “Conflict of Interest in High Office”, he counseled the UPP Government and cautioned them on how they governed and the need to maintain transparency and ‘sunshine’ on their activities.
In two other articles, “Voice of the People 1 & 2”, Dr. Mottley contends that Antigua’s Observer Radio was the driving force which allowed ordinary people to ‘have their say’ and influence monumental political and social developments in Antigua and Barbuda (and potentially the rest of the region).
