With our world offering television shows for children and infants and video games, children laptops, computer programs, books are becoming less and less attractive to a younger generation. With these
trends taking root in our society, thank goodness there are still initiatives focused on literacy. I would like to applaud Cedric Holder and Joanne Hillhouse who dedicate their Saturday mornings to books and all things literary.
Every Saturday this duo hosts the Cushion Club at the Senior’s Centre, just off of Fort Road. This Club is comprised of approximately 20 energetic children of all ages, some as young as three, who are taught that reading in fun. To engage the kids, Cedric and Joanne invite guest authors, host spelling games, introduce new books and take them on exciting field trips.
Cedric and Joanne have witnessed many of their regular attendees blossom over time. For example, some of the kids who were initially shy are now volunteering and spelling. Many others have acquired a real thirst for books. Even the children who have outgrown the club can credit their creativity and new literary interests to their time at the Cushion Club.
One Saturday I visited this group and the one thing that stuck out was the attentiveness of the kids. They were always volunteering to answer questions or listening diligently to their instructions. The Cushion Club is the perfect environment for kids who just want to learn more and expand their imaginative muscles; it is also the place where some of the shy children can shake the nerves of being in a classroom.
Cedric and Joanne hope that the club will get more volunteers and one day have a permanent home. Who knows, perhaps someday the Cushion Club will become Antigua’s own Reading Rainbow Group.
