“I’ve always loved butterflies. They are beautiful, serene and delicate,” muses the author of Butterfly in the Sunlight and Butterfly in the Moonlight, J.Nerissa Percival.  Nerissa doesn’t think of herself as a traditional poet who easily recites lines of the masters; instead, she sees herself as a person who writes what she experiences in rhythmic lines which has resulted in hundreds of poems.

During a period of unemployment, her father encouraged her to publish her works and pursue her dream of writing. Butterflies in the Moonlight, her first book, chronicles the journey of a woman (Nerissa) who experiences chronic heartbreak but eventually finds the man of her dreams. They begin dating and fall in love by the end of the book. In her second book, Butterflies in the Sunlight, published three months after the first book, the same woman continues her relationship and eventually becomes engaged. Nerissa chose to self publish, which avoids long response times from publishers. Butterflies Over the Rainbow, the last book in the trilogy, is yet to be written; however, Nerissa is certain it will be about the joy of marriage. She promises that once she experiences this bliss, the third instalment of her series will be published.

Nerissa’s body of work seeks to capture the essence of love, heartache, relationships and sex. She is now moving to more spiritual poems after becoming a Christian. With this new foundation, she plans to work on a body of spiritual poems called ‘Spiritually Speaking’. She says, “Not in the traditional ‘holy holy holy do this and be like that or you’ll go to hell kind of a book’. My mentality is certainly far from that.”

Her goal is to make this book an easy and pleasant read for Christians and non-Christians.  She wants it to be enjoyable for those who don’t even believe in God, or are lacking faith in God and perhaps peak their interest in Him.  Nerissa notes that many of the poems will have a tranquil spiritual sense, while not even mentioning God or anything spiritual directly. This author’s future plan sounds good and makes you anticipate reading her work.
