Antigua st. john's - Ambassador Lionel 'Max' Hurst has published again! This time, he has spent more than two years compiling the biography of the greatest Antigua/Barbuda citizen to have ever walked this earth.
Vere Cornwall Bird has been further immortalized by the former diplomat who pored over thousands of newspapers, documents and tombstones to bring this 300 page manuscript to life. The story of the 20th century, from 1909 to 1999, Vere Bird's birth and death, is told in great detail throughout the publication: VERE CORNWALL BIRD: When Power Failed To Corrupt, by Ambassador Lionel Hurst.
"He is clearly the most significant figure in our history, especially in the transformation and re-ordering of the Antigua and Barbuda nation," Ambassador Hurst recalled. The task was self-assigned, and followed his Luther George: The Barack Obama of Antigua and Barbuda story which came after the re-naming of Boggy Peak on August 4, 2009.
"The rich history of Antigua and Barbuda is lost in the current noise from the multiple offerings of cable television. Events in the USA are given greater importance than are the heroic deeds of our own brethren, past and current," Ambassador Hurst opines. "We must take hold of history and bend it to serve the interests of youth and the future, rather than be caught exclusively in the glitz of today's paranormal communications," Hurst concluded.
Ambassador Hurst has also written the story of 25 years of diplomacy as practiced by the small nation-state from 1981 to 2007. DEMOCRACY BY DIPLOMACY was completed in 2007 and remains available to those who wish for a lesson in greatness and smallness. How a small state's diplomats can push a great superpower like the USA to adopt positions that it otherwise would not wish to, is the theme of this 250 page book. "My function is to document and to make available," Hurst said.
The author is not yet finished his life's work. He and the Honorable Lester Bird are working on an autobiography which will give an account of how it is possible to achieve outstandingly, even in and after a colony has been transformed. That publication may take a year.
Ambassador Hurst is available for lectures and other appearances. He is in New York City until December 29, 2012, and will be back in Antigua for two months, until March 2013.
"This day in history is most important: On December 20, 1939, the Trades Union Act was adopted by the General Legislative Council of the Leeward Islands. It made bargaining for wages and salaries lawful, for the first time in 300 years of history.
On December 20, 1951, the first election under an adult suffrage constitution took place in Antigua and Barbuda. Eight representatives were elected to the Parliament of Antigua by the votes of more than 14,000 adults the first time in the history of Antigua and Barbuda.
LONG LIVE ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA!!

Tis The Season Of The Wise Men!
"Send Out You Hand" is another new book by Dorbrene Omarde, the Bard of GoAB Reparations, which follows the "intersecting comtemporary lives of businessmen/wom en, socio-political activists & academics" post WI Federation on 6 SIDS replete with food, music & cricket. Its grounding is in the "less-than-succ essful present efforts of regional integration by the present political" elites from whom he gets his sustenance. True to class affiliations the story is woven with "the ... relationships of middle class men & women". No need to dwell on the Poor, who we will always have.
