Antigua St. John’s - A new book written by a former ranking member of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has blasted the party for failing to live up to electoral promises made prior to its 2004 elections victory.
The book, “The UPP - Government in Eclipse”, was written by Cecil Wade, businessman and once a staunch supporter and financial contributor of the UPP when it was in opposition.
In the Foreword, Wade, the first Antiguan to take up the post as General Manager of the Mill Reef Club, said the book reflects his personal views and observations.
In the book, Wade recalls the early years of the UPP, noting the principals involved with the formation of the new party in the early 1990s.
He also noted that the party grew in strength, and by the 2004 general elections, it swept the Antigua Labour Party from power in a popular mandate that ended the 28-year rule by that party.
However, Wade notes that it was not long before the shortcomings of the UPP began to surface.
“The Labour Party was in charge of government for a period of 28 years and after being in opposition, the UPP was able to convince the majority of the population that it would do a better job than the ALP did. They were wrong,” he wrote.

That my friend is called thinking big and that is why I will not jump to conclusion about what Wade may be saying. I'm merely saying that I hope it is not an issue of sour grapes.
Please let us use a sense of balance in this discussion.

Food for thought, a great warrior/soldier who is in charge of the troops during war, is always prepared for the inevitable; rainwear is also a good tool to have. You are fighting a psycological war as well, attempting to sway the conciousness of a mass of people who are caught up in the doldrums. Imagine the kind of credibility 'the Lone Wolf' pack would recieve just by picketing in the rain. Perception is reallity...Stay Strong in One Aim, One Truth, One Destiny...I will contact you

I know that Barnes is an ALPite to the bone. His "friends" know him!
I NEVER said I read the book. My commentary indicated that I was hoping that it is not an issue of sour grapes. I will read the book once it p** my academic bar and then I will make my judgment.
Auddie - It is your right to make whatever political decision via voting that you want. I will not seek to influence you. Why have jumped on my bandwagon - to douse me w/ flames?
Our democracy is below par and that is why neither the UPP or the ALP can sway me. Both have let down Antiguans and Barbudans in a very big way, and I cannot stake a vote on them.
The ALP could very well win the next election, because it has a core group of abt 20,000 persons who will always go out and vote. The UPP has less than that w/ some ALP defectors, plus its disenchanted supporters - add to that fence sitters. Voila ALP!

Many Antiguan were disappointed in the last two terms of the ALP aministration, the UPP won obviously because former ALP supporters were willing to take a chance on them. We were even more disappointed by their obvious incompetence in Governance. . The People are using this media to cry out even those who formely decided to give the UPP a chance I am one of them. Where is it written that if you fall down you must stay down. The UPP betrayed my trust in them and I now cant wait to see the back of them. Since there are no other options I will take a chance on the ALP again, if for no other reason but for them to claw back all that the UPP has taken from us the Antiguan Citizens and residents who have paid their immigration dues and have earned the right to live here and become citizens. It is one thing to harp on a problem, but quite another to find a solution. The solution is follow democratic process or organise a coup!!!!!

I made a statement reflecting a possibility, but you seem to miss that point. The reality is that sour grapes at times are just that sour grapes without any substance and it is why I said that I would read the book first before jumping hook, line and sinker, before agreeing with Wade, and more-so Barnes. And I see Barnes as a political lackey parading through his journalism.
I wonder though 2 Cents if you have read the book!!!!!!!! Me thinks that thou are politically motivated hence the attack.

@Seaview
That petty folly that you UPPities demonstrates is amazing! Any suggestion that your sweetheart government celebrates mediocrity is seen as sour grapes. But there are grapes that are indeed sour and must be named for what they are.
To be more persuasive, it is better that you produce a body of mounting evidence refuting what Mr Wade has argued and show in fact and deed that the UPP lived up and surpassed its promises without the typical blaming game. Wheel and come again.

I am guarded by persons such as Wade since the fox does consider the grapes sour because it cannot get to them.
On the other hand, I am not so sure that I can trust Barnes and his articles. He has proven time and time again that he is a political lackey looking for UPP to disappear so that he may garner some position in the new ALP regime.
I look forward to seeing if this is the fox vs grapes analogy or it is the case of something insightful and will lend to serious discussions on the development of our society.

A....Where are the Lone Wolf's during this week of percieved 'emancipation celebrations', carnival, a time when the Nation is highlighted and spotlighted? At Are you picketting everyday at strategic locations? Entrance/exit to the airport, jam corner, a j'ouvert mas band, a float in the parade, even a group/troupe. Take advantage of this time, this is why the author released his book at this time, to take advantage of the moment.
NEVER, EVER REMOVE REDONDA FROM THE SO vereIGN NATION of Antigua, Barbuda& Redonda. It very important in International Treaty negotiations, as is the case of the Whaling Agreement recently signed by the GOAB and the Japanese, the new foreign cat whose licking/lapping /banking a sizeable chunk of our fishing industry.

indegenious Antiguans....
We/Antiguans lost controll of OUR own destiny. There is lots of blame to share and go around, so ain't no use crying over spilt milk, at the very least, 'these foreign cats' are happy to lick it up. However, all is not lost, WE INDEGENIOUS ANTIGUANS WILL HAVE TO WORK COLLECTIVELY, TO TURN THIS TSUNAMI AROUND. WE CAN USE A PAGE FROM THE TORTOLIANS CULTURE.
