Antigua St john's - The Kiwanis Club of St John's officially launched its "Read Around The World Book Distribution Project" on Tuesday April 3 with a donation of 1,000 books to the Greenbay Primary School.

President Noel Browne encouraged the children to become active readers by making good use of the books.

He used the opportunity to pay tribute to Children's Chance Inc, from whom the club received 35,000 books for local distribution.

Children's Chance is a non-profit organisation in the USA, which has, to date, donated two million books to the Caribbean region.

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, who is also Parliamentary representative for the area, delivered the feature address.  He emphasized the importance and benefits of reading, and encouraged the students to read.

He also encouraged the teachers to develop a programme to ensure that the students engage in serious reading at home and at school.

The prime minister thanked the Kiwanis Club for choosing Greenbay Primary to be the first recipient. He stated that he felt a great deal of satisfaction for the positive impact the Kiwanians have been making on our society.

Chairman of the Community Services Committee, Hollis Francis Jr, made a symbolic hand-over of the books to a young student, Latiquah Straker.

Principal Denise Solomon thanked the club for fulfilling a need at the school.  She said the much needed material was the first donation towards the re-opening of the school library. She assured the Club that the books will be put to good use.

The Kiwanis Club of St. John's will be making similar presentations to various schools and other institutions around the island in the upcoming weeks.
