Antigua St John's - The Best of Books has taken its first step into the world of publishing with the release of Brian Dyde’s “A Short Guide To Antigua”.
According to bookshop manager Barbara Arrindell, the decision to publish the book was driven by a dire need for a basic book containing general and historic information on the island.
“This publication,” according to Arrindell, “meets the needs of visitors, students, and residents who recognise the importance of having knowledge and understanding of this island.
The photographs used for the front and back cover of the 40-page guide are the work of Roddy Grimes-Graeme, while illustrations within were taken from Antigua My Antigua, a recently released colouring and activity book illustrated by Edison Liburd.
Although there are now many books about the nation or about specific sections of Antigua and Barbuda’s history or culture, a great void was created when Brian Dyde’s A History of Antigua went out of print four years ago.
“As a result,” the bookshop manager explained, “there is now no general history book on the island available.” The fact that unlike most territories, Antigua & Barbuda never adopted Dyde’s history book for use in the school system led to the British-based publisher opting not to reprint it, as there was too low a demand to make it a profitable venture.
The Best of Books believes that A Short Guide To Antigua provides an affordable short-term solution to the bigger problem posed by not having a complete history book available. The new publication will soon be available throughout the island.
