Antigua St John's - Grade three students of the Antigua Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School recently set up a soup kitchen downtown at the VC Bird bust.
About 120 people in need of a meal were served a hot cup of soup and a wheat roll by the 70 students and their teachers as part of community service events for 2011.
Passers-by also enjoyed the children’s singing and poems as they spread love in St John’s. During the last school year, the students of the SDA Primary also held a Harvest Hay, where parents and teachers contributed fruits and vegetables in aid of two local senior homes.
Principal Vivian Nicholas pointed out that it is important for our children to experience the satisfaction and blessings that come from helping others.
Nicholas said that serving the community teaches children responsibility not only for themselves, but for other people. “It is through community service that children understand that their actions can have a positive impact on the lives of others,” Nicholas said.
One student said, “When I share with others, it makes me feel good inside.”
Also present at the event was Dr Eulalie Semper, education director of the South Leeward Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. Dr Semper pointed out that in its academic plan, the Seventh-Day Adventist education also prepares students for service, and that the SDA schools in Antigua will continue to provide a well-rounded education.
Shelby Nicholas and other members of the Community Service Department of the South Leeward Mission of Seventh-Day Adventists also participated, assisting the children and teachers.
