Director of Education Raps Principals

Director of Education Jacintha PringleAntigua St. John's - Director of Education Jacintha Pringle has expressed disappointment at some public school principals’ decision to join in the industrial action taken by teachers over late payment of salaries.

Pringle told her ministry’s communications department that principals must remember they have a responsibility.

“While I understand that teachers are taking industrial action, I just want to remind public schools principals that they ought to be aware of the fact that they are a part of management, and management is not on strike,” she said

Her comments followed the poor turnout of students at the annual Commonwealth Day Service at the All Saints Anglican Church on Monday. Pringle said it was a great disappointment to witness an almost empty church, which ultimately hampered the planned event.

“The ministry is disappointed that some schools did not show up, although they were supposed to be part of that service,” she said. “They were informed long before the industrial action started that their schools will be participating in a significant way, and so I must say I was surprised to find that some of the participating schools were not there.”

Pringle pleaded with principals to “be more responsible”. She said she is fully aware of what is transpiring (late payment of salaries), but at the same time, principals must remember that children are being taught certain values. She labelled the non-attendance of schools that were slated to participate in Monday’s service as disrespectful to the Ministry of Education and also to the nation.

“I hope something like this does not happen again. I am saying to school principals you are not supposed to be on strike. The life of the school continues,” she said.

Despite her disappointment, Pringle commended the schools that actively participated in the service.

The 2013 Commonwealth Day service was held under the theme, “Opportunity through Enterprise, Unlocking Potential with Innovation and Excellence.”

#24 Unpaid Teachers » 2013-03-13 20:18

I refused to address the issue associated with Mrs. Pringle's comments. However this is my plight. Both my husband and I are teachers. None of us have been paid. This has been going on for over six months. My account has a very high negative balance that (although not shown) is increasing everyday. You see my mortgage is due on the 1st of the month so is my car payment (interest is racking up daily). Also, my student loan (remember I am a teacher, I have to improve my knowledge). By the way, I only got an increase of $60.00 for a $40,000 education that I had to pay for. By the way courts keep calling, you know how they work. Oh yes we have children too to feed. By the way we had to go to work everyday and back without gas in the vehicle. Oh yes, we also gave children who came to school without bus money money to return home because the school bus did not come back for them. Now tell me .... who's going above and beyond the call of duty.

All these directors in government. A Director of Social Security who cant pay pensioners. An executive director of ABHTI who cant provide quality education. An academic director of hotel school who cant deliver the syllabus to students and suspends them when they speak up. A tourism authority director who cant bring more tourists. And now a director of education who cant ensure that teachers are paid? they need to stop directing and start working.

Chef needs to apologize  for calling "Watching a "petrified turd". Chef words where driven by emotion and spoken without the due proses of though.
It is hard for Chef to see his sisters and brothers in education, the future of our children and our beloved nation, having to take such strong action just to put food on the table at home, if they still have one next mortgage day.
if you are luck your ipad will give just enough light to see the next set of bills to pay.
Chef thus says sorry to his brother in law " the president" of the petrified turd association and all her members.
Chef did not know that calling "watching" a petrified turd would be hurtful and disrespectful to a petrified turd.
Chef prays this apology will allow your association to retract the legal action for slander against Chef respectfully.. :D  :-)

Pay the teachers

#21 JD » 2013-03-12 18:42

Well, I'm sure Pringle got paid but it's always the same with our (civil - so called) servants, so long as they're alright they really don't care about anyone else - how they forget their place.

honestly you are a petrified turd .Clearly you have been paid but many have not.
Chef has been reliably informed that even now many teachers are teaching those who are facing CXC exams very soon ,they are broke not heartless but Chef can't say the same for you.

She clearly received her pay on time, so she can not imagine what it means to work without pay and still have to pay your bills.

Who feels it knows it an it is not just the teachers that are waiting to be paid for work done.

Chef will state that unless you your self have not been paid you need to hush your mouth and hide your face in shame ,attacking your principals for taking a stand >>> disgusting :-x :-x :-x :-x :-x

I think you are wrong with your comments, I find your comments bullying and out of your debts. How can a hungry man work? The Word of the Lord says, 'Give to Caesar what is Caesars and unto God what is God's. Those teachers and Principals had to take actions because you have not paid them, they have a home to provide for and bills to be paid. How can they say to their debtors they cannot pay? You are wrong and very robust in your statements against these Principals, teachers and students. Was the church service a cover up? How could you face God knowing that people in the service hearts are heavy from the injustice they are receiving from you?please think again!

Why are you so concern about some church service for commonwealth, it should be a church service just to give GOD praise, however the princapals and teachers are human they need their monies to do their business. Why don't you go and help to fix the problem that's at GREENBAY SCHOOL that has the children fainting.

>>> and by berating the Director of Education, aren't we doing as she did - heaping disrespect? I am sure she did not mean it this way, but is not mature enough to comment on a topic in public without getting herself in trouble. She needs to understand that when wearing the hat of Director of Education, she must speak professionally and with dignity, not the "fish market" Jacinta lingo. Teachrers please forgive Mrs. Pringle and work with our children to be peaceable!

Mrs. Pringle is a joke

#10 Real Observer » 2013-03-12 07:48

Until now I had nothing but respect for Mrs. Pringle as an educator. Her comments here have forced me to rethink as they amount to contempt, disrespect and insensitivity. I am almost certain that she and others in her "management" position have already been paid for February. Where then is her heart, care and concern for the other "managers" who have families, mortgages and other obligations and who are yet to be paid?
Mrs. Pringle should be venting her anger against the government for placing teachers, including the principals and students in this invidious position, which by extension places her duties as Director of Education under pressure.
Redeem yourself Mrs. Pringle and defend those teachers and principals who work directly under your watch.

#7 Observer » 2013-03-12 07:18

Mrs. Pringle's comment is confusing. Who was expected to accompany the students at the church service? The teachers? Weren't the teachers taking industrial actions? Can a principle manage a school without the teachers?

#6 Annoyed » 2013-03-12 06:47

I don't see how the principal can be responsible for students not showing up at the service. They did not show up at school. Parents kept their children at home. What can be done there? I seriously doubt that there were principals striking. While the director thinks the poorly attended service was disrespectful I'm sure many persons view the non payment of February salaries far more disrespectful than that!

Commonwealth Day :D :D. Ms Pringle did not get the memo: We will not be celebration SLAVE OWNS DAY ANYMORE. “Opportunity through Enterprise, Unlocking Potential with Innovation and Excellence.” - WHERE?

principals must remember that children are being taught certain values. - Todays lesson - IT IS RIGHT AND CORRECT TO GET PAID WHEN YOU WORK.

Pringle said it was a great disappointment to witness an almost empty church, which ultimately hampered the planned event.- BORING :zzz , no educational value, can not hold the students attention with this crap. it this for you hobnobbers or the students? Do not be surprise when no one shows up next year. Commonwealth day is a direct contradiction to a healthy Black experience it is in conflict with our very being: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C-aDqgVqzY.

The principals are unlocking their potential with innovation and excellence by breaking rank with the establishement to satnd with the teachers who work hard enough to get paid. There is an opportunity to satnd for what is fair, right and just...they took it. Rather enterprisinf I think

Pringle you have disappointed me! Silent about the families of hard working teachers without money - yet ready to blast those of your own fraternity for taking a stand.

The teachers should strike now to have you removed since you clearly put the Upp above your own. What a burning shame!
