Teachers’ Sit-In to Continue

Teachers’ Sit-In to ContinueAntigua St. John's - The industrial action being undertaken by government-employed teachers is likely to continue for a second day on Friday.

That confirmation came from President of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers Vernest Mack, who said the industrial action - a sit-in, will continue until all teachers are paid their February salaries.

Mack said the ABUT has an ongoing agreement with the Ministry of Finance that its members will be paid no later than the 6th of each month.

She said a check with her membership revealed that most teachers are paid through Scotiabank and CIBC FirstCaribbean, but these two institutions had not paid salaries up to late Wednesday.

She said two other banks – Royal and ECAB – had been paying salaries, so some teachers had been paid.

The ABUT president said there have not been attempts by the Ministry of Finance to get in touch with the executive of the union to discuss a way out of the dilemma.

Several schools were forced to send their students home early on Thursday due to the industrial action. Teachers have been advised to report for duties on Friday as per normal, but to then proceed to the bank to inquire whether or not their salaries had been paid.

The industrial action started on Thursday March 7.

Vernice Mack needs to tell us why our children still have to find after school cl** in order to pass their exams if the teachers are doing a good job. Those of you without children need not comment as you are not in the kitchen so you do not feel the heat. I find the teachers actions totally unfair because they are aware that 75% of teachers have already been paid which shows that the government is trying under the circumstances. And by the way other countries are sending employees home to deal with the economic crisis - do we live in a box? Get real Vernice Mack - time will catch up with you.

I hope this does NOT apply to the teachers at Clare Hall Secondary. Coz all they do is chat and flirt with each other. :-|
