Unpaid Teachers Plan to Take Action

Unpaid Teachers Antigua St. John's - Antigua & Barbuda’s teachers are poised to take industrial action today to protest another month of late payment, according to information from the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers.

Caribarena was told that as of yesterday, “a great number” of teachers had not been paid for February.

Teachers in Antigua staged a sit-in in December 2012 in response to weeks of late payment. This forced the early closure of some schools, and seriously affected students at the time and created, sparking public uproar.

A statement from the Teachers Union on Wednesday evening said, “As many of you are aware, a great number of teachers still remain unpaid for the month of February as of Wednesday, March 6, 2013.”

The union statement said in response to this situation, its executive has determined it “necessary to exercise our option to initiate action which we deem to be reasonable under the circumstance.”

The union advised all teachers to report for duty on Thursday and sign in as normal, and find out from their schools’ principals if they intend to check on the status of their salaries.

After this inquiry, the teachers are to contact union headquarters for further instructions. Efforts to reach the union’s general secretary, Ashworth Azille, for a comment on the matter were unsuccessful.

Tell the banks and APUA that it's only 2 or 3 days so don't charge interest or cut off utilities. Some people really don't seem to have a clue. Then again it figures. A lot of people always have much to say about how much better private schools are than public. As far as I'm concerned that would just be wasted time to mention certain facts that have been mentioned every year for the last however many years.

I often wonder if antiguans live on a different planet. Do you people read the news from around the region and internationally ? So we are talking about February....2 or 3 days shorter than the normal month. The majority of teachers have been paid and what we have is all teachers going home and leaving our children. This is pure crap. We all are familiar that we have issues with many of our children's teachers - that is why we pay for extra cl** - they are not doing a good job and still they want to take action. No wonder the private schools are doing much better than the public schools because the teachers are committed. Yea pay is late, but you are quite familiar with the circumstances - get you all tail to the damn classrooms and do some work.

#13 protector » 2013-03-07 14:38

the Union has given way too much leeway to this government. the 6th of the other month is a whole week. why so long. by the 30th/31st if nothing happen we should be looking to take action. with all the taxes going on teachers lucky if they have 2 pence by the 2nd week of the month. how one is expected to feed their family, pay bus to go school and get back home? loans which attract interest, insurance? what is going on. if they can't pay us give us the free movement paper so we c an leave. I hope we will remember because when election is closer we wont have these issues. Mr PM needs to tell us how many teachers can be paid with the money the 3 persons getting to go venezuela?

When you love/honor and appreciate something/someo ne you treat it/him with respect and care at all cost. It is evident that our gov't don't respect and care for our teachers; they only honor them with lip service. Our teachers deserve more. TEACHERS lay the FOUNDATION (EDUCATION) on which EVERY successful country is built; without teachers and this foundation we would not amount to much. Please stop disrespecting them by paying them late!

The REBEL SENATORS are to be blamed for the UPP not having money to pay civil servants. These senators prevented the UPP government from putting our passports on sale on the INTERNATIONAL FLEA MARKET. Terrorists, Criminals and Fugitive all welcome to become Antiguan Citizens.

I recall in 2004 the UPP saying that ALP's failure to pay civil servants on time is a glaring indication that they are INCOMPETENT and UNFIT to govern. Now that UPP is in the same situation, the Westminster system affords the government helpful face saving alternatives.

1. Admit that they are out of their depths and Demit Office post haste.
2. Do like Asot and apologize to the people, and then Call Elections.
3. Get a loan from the "double agent" with the protected offshore accounts.

UPP, Where de money gone?

#5 Bluddy Bloke » 2013-03-07 08:20

Teachers sshould not be striking for late payment of salaries only, but also for unfavourable conditions at the schools. The class rooms are not properly equipped with desks and chairs; schools are not properly secured, books are limited and the list can go on and on. During the tenure of this UPP administration, the Gov't revenue has increased by 200%, yet their expenses cannot be met. Education levy, which was an eye soar to them, is still in existence, but not meeting its demands. Why? I would like to know. Where de money gone?

#4 Antigua Bill » 2013-03-07 08:16

This type of behavior is inexcuseable. The teachers are represented a by a collective bargaining unit so I am quite sure there is a contract with the GOAB. Why don't the Government live up to it's contract obligation? College is expensive and people have to repay student loan. Creditors do not want to hear " I did not get payed this month."

Just don't report for work, period! There aren't enough teachers waiting in the wings for them to fire all of you and that would definitely send a strong message that you are serious. Reporting to work, while not being paid, sends the message to the gov't that it is ok to continue treating you with such disdain. Hell, the politicians are all paid on time and in full, what makes them any more better than our hard working teachers?

PAY THEM NOW

#1 skyewill » 2013-03-07 05:16

while we find money to pay for fences and worthless legal fees and tons of waste we pay our people last. The Budget should have set aside peoples pay. What happened to PEOPLE FIRST policy? There is no reason for anyone with serious credentials to want to work Antigua. The country is flat lining.
