Education Week Goes Cultural

Education Week Goes CulturalAntigua St. John's - Education Week activities heated up Wednesday evening at the Multi-Purpose Centre as primary and secondary school children showcased their talent and creativity with a cultural extravaganza.

The week of activities, which began on February 1, kicked off with a ceremony in honour of the academic excellence of the 2012 top common entrance primary school student, Alicia Paul, of the Mary E Piggott school.

Last evening, the boys of the St Joseph's Academy rocked the Cultural Centre with two renditions of “It Pays to be Bright” and “It Takes a Village”.

Led in song by Principal Rudolph Davis, the choir director, the St. Joseph's boys gave a rousing performance that had the audience of students, parents, and teachers on their feet singing along and cheering them on.

Not to be outdone, the students of the JT Ambrose Primary, accompanied by Calypso Joe, put on a very energetic musical performance.

Children from the Jennings Primary gave the sole dramatic performance, while the Willikies Primary kept it traditional with steel pan ensemble entitled “The Rose”.

Showcasing the diversity of talent, the ABYSO string ensemble, comprising students of various schools, treated the audience to renditions of Matchmaker and Star Wars, while a soulful guitar duet of One Hundred and Twenty Seven was performed by the Antigua Girls’ High School.

Other cultural performances were put on by primary students from Sunnydale, Weselyan, Bendals Primary, Cedar Grove, Five Islands and Freemansville. Clare Hall Secondary also showcased their talent.

Meanwhile, the week of activities continue today, February 7, with a health fair at the Ottos Comprehensive School, while on Friday, teachers will be appreciated by their students.

On February 23, the Education Award Ceremony will honour longserving teachers for their dedication to the profession. On February 28, the Dr Allister lecture will close off the commemorative activities at the University of the West Indies open campus.

The theme for this year's observances is “Every Learner Achieves”. During the opening ceremony, Acting Minister of Education Winston Williams gave assurances that the government is committed to ensuring a safe and caring environment for each student. He further advised that three additional early education centres will be opened in the Greenbay, Potters, and Villa communities, while two additional secondary schools in Tomlinsons and Five Islands are in the planning stages for construction.
