Youth Week 2012Antigua St. John’s - The Department of Youth Affairs in collaboration with the National Youth Ambassador and Volunteer Corps will mount a series of events to mark Youth Week 2012.

Many of the activities for Youth Week will necessitate the involvement of the public and as such, the Department of Youth Affairs seeks the public’s support as to help make the observance a memorable one.

The activities begin with a School Volunteer Initiative spearheaded by the National Youth Volunteer Corps on Friday, September 21, where schools will carry out volunteer activities. Members of the public are also invited to carry out their own personal volunteer initiatives.

Youth Fun and Sports Day will be held on September 22 at Dredgers Sports Ground, St. John’s, from 1 pm. All youth groups are invited to participate in a day of fun and health-supporting activities.

On September 23 a Church Service will be held at St. John’s Seventh-day Adventist Church on Nevis Street at 4 pm. All youth groups and the public are invited to attend this session of praise and worship.

Youth Work Experience Day takes place on September 25, where students will receive internships for the day. The Department of Youth Affairs is partnering with a number of public and private enterprises who have provided ‘jobs’ for the day for secondary school children.

The following day, September 26, the National Youth Exhibition and Health Expo will take place. This activity is intended to showcase youth talent as well as to promote the notion of healthy living. Youth and students/schools are invited to register with the department to participate in the exhibition. Registration is free of cost.

The exhibition and expo will be held at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre, Perry Bay from 9 am tol 6 pm. Other activities planned include health talks/discussions, screenings, mini gym, workout sessions and demonstrations. An invitation is extended to the public to attend, especially  the Opening Ceremony which starts at 9 am.

Youth Ambassadors and Youth will host a Student Governance Forum to engage students in
discussions with respect to the establishment of student councils on September 27.

The Youth Explosion scheduled for the day following, promises an evening of clean fun as young people display and share their many talents at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre, from 7 pm. Youth and other individuals interested in participating are invited to register with the Department.

A Department Social on September 28 is planned for staff, friends, family and youth development partners to have an evening of fun and relaxation.
