Financial Regulator Earns Doctorate Degree

Paul AsheAntigua St John's -
Paul Ashe, Supervisor of International Banks and Trust Corporations at Antigua and Barbuda’s Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC), on Saturday received his doctoral degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, in a graduation ceremony attended by hundreds of graduates and their proud family members.

Dr. Ashe, whose dissertation topic, entitled, “Corporate Governance in Antigua and Barbuda: A Case Study of Five State Owned Enterprises (SOE),”  is a comprehensive study on how boards of directors implement and monitor corporate governance in SOEs in Antigua and Barbuda.

“In view of the overall importance of SOEs to the economies of developing countries in general and small island developing States such as Antigua and Barbuda in particular, I hope that the findings from my thesis will act as catalyst for scholars from our twin-island State and beyond to expand on the base of knowledge on corporate governance in SOEs within CARICOM,” said Dr. Ashe.

Antigua and Barbuda’s newest scholar noted that the pace of implementing a good corporate governance framework within SOEs continue to lag the pace at which leaders within the private sector implement and monitor corporate governance.

Dr. Ashe is looking forward to sharing the findings of his dissertation with leaders of SOEs and the public within the Caribbean.

He opined that there are numerous opportunities to improve the corporate governance framework within SOEs, beginning with a process that starts with how leaders select and appoint directors to the boards of SOEs.

I am not sure where the individual who stated "many people do not hire you if you get your degree online" is receiving their information from, but this information is totally absurd and makes no sense whatsoever. What counts is if university is reputable and accredited, which the University of Phoenix meets this criteria. Do your homework and you will find doctoral students attending the university must attend three to four required residences where they are in a physical classroom for 3, 5, and 8 days for 7 to 8 hours each day. The program from start to finish is rigorous just like any other accredited and reputable university. Depending on the degree, the university offers degree programs both online and in the physical classroom.

Online Degree!!!

#15 Cutlass » 2012-07-06 01:33

In some places, people would not hire you if you get your degree online.

Who cares what family he comes out of. John Ashe, his brother claimed to have a Ph.D. as well but cannot handle the problems that exist inside of that Antiguan office.

Go figure!

I too have relived a similar situation. I my time when you past your degree you really had to work hard for it. Nothing was online and you had to be going to cl** etc. Do your own reseach. The education system in the US is ver flawed. The check and balances are not strict and anyone can front for you. Especially is you have a twin brother or sister. Furthermore they have lower the bar. A 5 is a pass. A 7 is a honor. etc. So when young people these days tell you they pass their degree just take it for what it is and watch if they can perform on the job. Cause the universities in the US are all about making money.

I congratulate you for your academic achievement and I am pleased more young Antiguans are learned enough to get the Jobs done. However this also brings me to wonder how you have demonstrated to put your intellect to work in practice as we have seen the Stanford demise and now the AOB under management right under your supervision. Is it that you are not able to put theory in to practice or are your hands tight. Leaves me wondering which is it

Sam, I dont think you understand the concept of a PH.d. It is not like an undergraduate where one can just regurgitate information read, or cut and paste information online. This level of degree calls for original thinking, and proferring a solution to a problem, with a fresh perspective not offered by an other author. In addition, after he has written his possibly 100-150 page theses he then has to do a viva-voce t defend his thesis before a panel o experts. I worked for many years in Barclays Bank with Paul and he has always been a dedicated and studious person who passed the banking exams and worked his way rapidly up the ranks in the bank, . In addition Paul comes from a bright family, his brother John Ashe is Ambassador to the UN, and another Peter in bank manageent to. It might be an idea Sam to advise your son not to indulge in buying papers off the internet, as he is not learning effectively by doing the requisite research, and may never be fully proficient in his role. I wish Paul every success in his future endeavours! Let us all celebrate our son of the soil!!!

SOE!

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Congrats to Dr. Paul Ashe.

SOE what's NEXT?

Assuming that the Boards voluntarily agreed to their participation, it is expected that copies of this Dissertation will be provided to the Boards for study and implementation of the recommendations.

Again, Kudos and all the Best to Dr. Ashe.

Thesis part 2

#10 Jackie Spence » 2012-07-02 22:16

And we can go on and on...this must stop if we are to move Antigua and Barbuda forward!
It would be better if the Government created a State Enterprise that was fictitious and let all the Party Hacks run it with a fictitious budget! That way we would only lose the moneys paid to them each month! Then we could get competent persons to run the important state enterprises etc.

Thesis

#9 Jackie Spence » 2012-07-02 22:15

Dear Dr. Ashe,
You need to advise the Upp Government that when they put square pegs in round holes then the result is disaster!
Imagine making the stepmother of a Minister of Government who served as a housekeeper the Marketing manager of The Free Trade Zone...result it gone agwassa!
Imagine making a person called "3 questions" who has no financial or business experience a Director on the local Development Bank Board...result wasted opportunity!
Imagine making a great Calypsonian (with zero qualifications) a Director on the APUA Board...result no value for money engines and near bankruptcy!
Imagine making a old Party hack with no formal education a Director at the Port...result bankruptcy!
Then the daughter of a former minister of Government is given a big post in Tourism...resul t falling arrivals!
What about the sister of Minister to run the Hospital...resu lt ask anyone who has to go there!

I was fortunate to collaborate with Dr. Paul on a few projects during my enrollment at the University of Phoenix. He always presented excellent ideas as well as interesting perspectives. His research skills will surely benefit the research community in Antigua and Barbuda. Congratulations , Dr. Paul!

I think you might be comparing apples to oranges! Dr. Ashe's Thesis was on a local subject, so it would have been virtually impossible for him to get a 'used" paper on line!

In any case I did business with Dr. Ashe when he was with Barclay's Bank on High Street at that time I found him to be very professional and competent.

Congratulations Dr. Ashe, you've made all Antigua and Barbuda proud.

FOCUS ON YOUR SON

#6 THE GODFATHER » 2012-07-02 10:10

It is insulting for you or anyone else to be ".. concerned about the prestige of this degree" since it was earned from a reputable university. Dr. Paul Ashe, a distinguished Antiguan ad Barbuda should be congratulated, and not conjoined with your son's moral failings.

So, as a parent you should be correcting the illegality of your sons action before you condemn others, I wish you and your son the best.

Congratulations Dr Ashe! I hope that your work will indeed improve corporate governance in A&B. However, businesses are not the only ones that can learn from your findings but I am sure that the government can also learn a thing or two.

Paul's degree

#1 Sam » 2012-07-02 05:30

It is good to see that people earn their degrees by themselves. As a citizen of Antigua I have a hope that this program will be brought to life and it will be benefitial to our economy. However, I'm concerned about the prestige of this degree, of it's legality should I say? I mean, my son is in college right now, he is on his second year of study. And I know this because my son told me- he has been buying essays and research papers online. I know that he has been using couple of them. In the reslut he got his grades not even thinking about what to write his papers about. So, I think this is a good example of flaws in our education. Sites make it too esay to get a a grade but then appears an assumption- if one buys a paper for him, is it truly his honoured degree? is there any real knoledge after all?
I do hope that made it by himself, so then we might have a chance for improvement. I am very happy for you Paul.
