Re-registration for School Uniform Grant in Barbuda

Students in BarbudaAntigua St. John’s – A complete re-registration process for beneficiaries of the School Uniform Grant Programme (SUGP) will be held on Barbuda from June 27 to 29.

This comes after a number of inconsistencies were discovered within the Barbuda database during a visit made by relevant authorities to observe the operations of the programme.

“What we observed is that one parent would register a child even though the student may not be living with them. Then the individual with whom the child is living also shows up, and in some instances they are actually registered a second time,” SUGP Supervisor Leonie Martin said in a release.

Another reason that makes re-registration a necessity is an increase in the number of non-national students on the sister isle.

“While in Antigua the statuses of non-national students are carefully vetted, the same cannot be said of Barbuda, where that requirement in particular was not made compulsory,” Martin added.

SUGP officials will seek to correct those problems ahead of the start of this year’s programme to ensure strict compliance.

The new registration exercise for both the current beneficiaries and incoming students on Barbuda will be held at Sir Mc.Chesney George Secondary School from 9 am to 2 pm on the dates mentioned.

Current Barbudan students are required to present a birth certificate or passport, as well as a letter from the school in which they are enrolled.

New Barbudan applicants, who should be five years old by March 2013, need to present a valid passport or birth certificate.

Barbudan parents must present a valid passport, drivers’ license or voters’ identification card at the time they are registering the children.

Meanwhile, a valid passport and school letter must be presented on behalf of non-national students based in Barbuda during registration, and the parents of those students must present a valid passport.

There will be no change to the programme in Antigua, organisers have said.

This year, one pair of regular uniform will be issued to each eligible student.

The eighth instalment of the School Uniform Grant Programme will begin on July 9 and end on August 31, 2012.
