Antigua St John's - Principals and teachers from government and private schools met on Monday with officials from the Ministry of Education, the disaster office, and USAID to discuss the importance of each institution having a school safety programme.
The meeting was an initiative of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with USAID consultant Cecil Shillingford.
Shillingford works along with the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), an arm of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which is implementing a school safety programme throughout the region.
According to Shillingford, there are a lot of challenges in the schools, and it will cost money to put remedies in place to reduce the risks. He said it is important that the Ministry of Education drive the process forward to establish school safety programmes with full endorsement from the relevant authorities.
