Youth Launch Anti-Bullying Project

Anti-Bullying ProjectAntigua St John's - The Partners of the Americas Youth Ambassadors launched its leadership in action project, “Confronting the Growing Problem of Bullying in Schools in Antigua & Barbuda,” with a ceremony on April 17 at the roundabout on Old Parham Road.

The project will take the form of a public awareness campaign on the bullying problem in schools. The objectives of this project are: to create wider awareness about the growing problem of bullying in schools across Antigua & Barbuda; and to identify methods of reducing the incidence of bullying and its effects in schools.

During the ceremony, a billboard will be unveiled with the motto of the campaign, “Stop the Bullying, Stop the Pain!”

Thirteen Antiguan & Barbudan youth participated in the inaugural staging of the Youth Ambassadors Programme in the spring of 2011 travelling to the United States from April 13, 2011 – May 4, 2011.

This project satisfies a requirement of the Youth Ambassadors Programme that the youth must complete a leadership in action project upon their return.

The issue of bullying touched the youth ambassadors and inspired them to try to do something about it.

Their aim is to highlight this growing problem and be the catalyst for government, the private sector and NGOs to think seriously about and act decisively against the problem of bullying.

The Youth Ambassador Programme is a US State Department-sponsored cultural exchange programme that brings together youth, ages 15-18, from across the Americas to build understanding among countries, increase leadership skills, and prepare them to be positive agents of change through volunteer service.

They engage with local government and civic organisations, build relationships with host families and youth, and participate in skills-based trainings that enable and empower them to mobilize their communities towards positive change.

A release from the Youth said, "Bullying can happen anywhere: face to face, by text message, or on the web.

So, if you or someone you know is being bullied TELL SOMEONE!  Teachers, counselors and parents are all there to help you.  Help break the cycle before it breaks you."

Proud of Caribarena for supporting the youth of our nation. Many of the other media houses disappointed them because they waited but they never turned up at the event.

Congrats to those young ambassadors!
