People expect the churches to fix social ills but not to deal with underlying causes (their sins).

When the teachers of the churches speak out against sin, not only do organizations that promote various sins condemn the churches as "homophobic," "woman-haters," etc. but incite government officials to speak and to move against the churches.
Fixin g social ills is not the function of Jesus Christ's church. Inspiring outsiders (non-members) to behave as Christians are supposed to is not the purpose of the church. The purpose of the church is to worship God, edify and rebuke its own members, and convert nonmembers into members (Christians). Once a person is converted, each individual member, especially the teachers and leaders, of the church then has a responsibility to help that new member throw off the grip of sin in his(her) life.
The churches have a big enough job dealing with the spiritual and temporal problems of their own members. They do a lot toward society in general, not only by their example, but by organization among their members to help people in need, both members and nonmembers. But they never do enough, and never the right thing, if the accusations of their detractors are heard.

I wish politicians would realize that Antigua is NOT Theocratic (we are not governed by the rules of christianity, though many of us are christian). With that said, I don't think she should be calling on the church to fix anything. Not everyone believes in the church these days, it is losing its relevance in society. No longer can one say that 'this is the book of truth, don't question it, just accept it's teachings and you will gain eternal life" We young people have minds of our own. Just because you taught me something that your forefathers taught you to be true doesn't mean that it is true. Start trying to fix the problems logically and leave the lazy and futile religious practices out of it.

It seems as if God's Church is now 911. Bring them out when there is disaster. When the disaster is over, go in your corner and don't say anything until we call you to condone some practice we want to legitimize or to bless a public function just to say we pray in case God exists. We have got to be serious. Chandler said it best in Parliament, people need to seriously go back to God. Not necessarily "Church" as we know it but a serious spritual encounter with our heavenly father. Antigua is probabaly one of the most religous nations in the World. We good at religion-- Have a form of Godliness but deny the power thereof" . Timothy say to avoid such men.

"She also spoke on the need for the church to play a more active role in the communities. She reminisced about years past, when the churches would be highly visible, moving from door to door, trying to impart Christian values and morals" As far as know the father of this dear lady was a Pilgrim Holiness Minister and she was brought up in the church but this certainly did not help her values andmoral values if what I am hearing is true.

this great woman gives a human perspective what's wrong with that.where are they? what i vision with this woman, she is always thinking and seizing the moment and also making it in the service of something important.now is the time for healing the nation from the sick minds that are hurting the future.some will say that the voice of god is in the church.so please let his words come to light.remember when Jesus reveal himself it was a woman that saw him first, and then the message was carried to the others.so women have played and important part in the truth.and the truth is antigua needs you now more than ever before.

If they were in church they would hear the cries from both the pulpit and the pew. We condone what we consider small sin and want God to help us with the big ones. We as a people must turn to God if we want God to bless our nation and protect us from evil. God is not a God of convenience and is not to be mocked.

The church seems to come in for much criticism when things beak down. But when the church speaks out about the ills in society, such as homosexuality and adultery, even the government officials take the church to task. The church has been speaking about the rapes and praying for our nation, but many of our government ministers and public officials no longer attend church and have strayed so far from God and still want God to bless our nation.

I do not know why we as it were take on politicians. When they get into Parliament, they pontificate and make it seem as if they have all the answers. The Church has been saying alot, but people like Quinn et al give lip service to the calls made by the church. The Church has become a thing of convenience now just as it was in the lead up to the 2004 elections.
I do not know why government will not accept the blame that it is not exercising enough teeth in handling the Police who should be the ones looking for the rapists and the robbers.

There is a habit i notice by government to take no responsibility for things that fail. When the economy was perceived to be booming, they told it was all because of their great policies. There is failure in solving crime but government claims its the communities fault. Yesterday I heard Miss M. Gordon state that we have had crime pro filers here but because government did not pay them, they left the island. We all heard the former Canadian commissioner of police complaining about not getting needed equipment. The government response was to fire him.

Obviously the Minister thinks the church is silent on the matter because she does not put herself in a position to hear the church. Ms. Quinn/Mrs. Leandro (whichever you are right now) you would need to go to church, perhaps then you will HEAR.
As for the comment about if it was happening to men it would have been solved a long time ago - UTTER RUBBISH and just pure dunceness coming from the minister of education. that is taking feminism a bit over the top.

Why is it people only want to hear from the churches when there are problems? Everyone has a part to play when it comes to the morals of our society. Why don't the politicians exhibit some of the morals and values they keep talking about when they go to parliament? Aren't they aware they are being televised? If their attitudes and behaviours can be so horrible and nasty in one of our highest institutions, what is that saying to us who are up and coming? I suggest politicians from both sides seek to display some of these values and morals they are always so ready to talk about. Let's all seek a solution for rape instead of pointing fingers at others.
